Dragonborn Species Details
The ancestors of dragonborn hatched from the eggs of chromatic and metallic dragons. One story holds that these eggs were blessed by the dragon gods Bahamut and Tiamat, who wanted to populate the multiverse with people created in their image. Another story claims that dragons created the first dragonborn without the gods’ blessings. Whatever their origin, dragonborn have made homes for themselves on the Material Plane.
Dragonborn look like wingless, bipedal dragons— scaly, bright-eyed, and thick-boned with horns on their heads—and their coloration and other features are reminiscent of their draconic ancestors.
Dragonborn Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 5–7 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Draconic Ancestry
Your lineage stems from a dragon progenitor. Choose the kind of dragon from the Draconic Ancestors table. Your choice affects your Breath Weapon and Damage Resistance traits as well as your appearance.
Dragon | Damage Type |
---|---|
Black | Acid |
Blue | Lightning |
Brass | Fire |
Bronze | Lightning |
Copper | Acid |
Gold | Fire |
Green | Poison |
Red | Fire |
Silver | Cold |
White | Cold |
Breath Weapon
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of magical energy in either a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line that is 5 feet wide (choose the shape each time). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Constitution modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, a creature takes 1d10 damage of the type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d10 when you reach character levels 5 (2d10), 11 (3d10), and 17 (4d10).
You can use this Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Damage Resistance
You have Resistance to the damage type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait.
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Draconic Flight
When you reach character level 5, you can channel draconic magic to give yourself temporary flight. As a Bonus Action, you sprout spectral wings on your back that last for 10 minutes or until you retract the wings (no action required) or have the Incapacitated condition. During that time, you have a Fly Speed equal to your Speed. Your wings appear to be made of the same energy as your Breath Weapon. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a Long Rest.
Best dragonborn yet
My headcanon: they have the same lifespan as humans
i like dragonborn
The original version of this is better except for no tails and wings. Like the Legacy made Playing metallic different from playing chromatic, this makes them feel more distinct from each other, but now they are practically the same species. Bring back diversity
Finally Dragonborn get Darkvision!! yaaaaasssssss
About 80 years
Am I missing where it says their age range?
Two things:
1) if you want to use the Gemborn sub-race, you have to use the 2014 Dragonborn. Future books may add more sub-species, we can only hope.
2) forget about the age! None of the 2024 species include an age range. Adventurers all die young anyway. You can flavor any PC as young and clueless, or old and crotchety. Age has no effect on gameplay, so other than role-playing is irrelevant.
I agree, I would really like to have seen them add the gem dragons to this so that they’re all incorporated in one book.
Dragonborn, should be able to see in the dark, should be able to have wings and permanent flying (like the Aarakocra) and tails that way you can flavor them how you like. If you want your dragon born not to have wings or tails you could just say you don’t have them, but a lot of DM’s go strictly by the rules so if it doesn’t say you have them, they won’t let you have them.
this really limits the flavor of the dragon born and makes it very stale and stagnant.
some draconian’s had wings!
furthermore, they also need to include the gem dragons when you’re building a Drake warden as well as a Drake option
and then they need to make sure they add all this to D&D Beyond so that we can use these options when we’re building our character characters, which is very limited right now.
it says at the begining of the species section of the origins chapter, the the life spans are comparible or the same as humans unless the species seentry says otherwise
This will be my first character and I do wish dragon borns had tails and wings with a more human look. But they still look awesome!
Hi I'm awesome.
It's pretty clearly a DC based on one's own body, their constitution, and it wouldn't make sense for a breath weapon to have a DC based on one's intelligence or dexterity. Don't lean on the breath weapon, it's an extra feature, mostly good for those who can't deal with grouped enemies as well. I think the damage could scale more nicely but the DC is fine as is, and it's still dealing half on a success

Hang on. The new Dragonborn have tails? YES!!
If you own a copy of the 2024 PHB, I’d recommend looking at the picture of the Monk.
You’ll find a pretty neat picture of a Dragonborn with a tail!
You bet they do!
I have an interesting question about weight, what is the typical range if we exclude the rest?
I never knew I could fly.
The flavor!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Age range please?
