Dragonborn Species Details
The ancestors of dragonborn hatched from the eggs of chromatic and metallic dragons. One story holds that these eggs were blessed by the dragon gods Bahamut and Tiamat, who wanted to populate the multiverse with people created in their image. Another story claims that dragons created the first dragonborn without the gods’ blessings. Whatever their origin, dragonborn have made homes for themselves on the Material Plane.
Dragonborn look like wingless, bipedal dragons— scaly, bright-eyed, and thick-boned with horns on their heads—and their coloration and other features are reminiscent of their draconic ancestors.
Dragonborn Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 5–7 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Draconic Ancestry
Your lineage stems from a dragon progenitor. Choose the kind of dragon from the Draconic Ancestors table. Your choice affects your Breath Weapon and Damage Resistance traits as well as your appearance.
Dragon | Damage Type |
---|---|
Black | Acid |
Blue | Lightning |
Brass | Fire |
Bronze | Lightning |
Copper | Acid |
Gold | Fire |
Green | Poison |
Red | Fire |
Silver | Cold |
White | Cold |
Breath Weapon
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of magical energy in either a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line that is 5 feet wide (choose the shape each time). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Constitution modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, a creature takes 1d10 damage of the type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d10 when you reach character levels 5 (2d10), 11 (3d10), and 17 (4d10).
You can use this Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Damage Resistance
You have Resistance to the damage type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait.
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Draconic Flight
When you reach character level 5, you can channel draconic magic to give yourself temporary flight. As a Bonus Action, you sprout spectral wings on your back that last for 10 minutes or until you retract the wings (no action required) or have the Incapacitated condition. During that time, you have a Fly Speed equal to your Speed. Your wings appear to be made of the same energy as your Breath Weapon. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a Long Rest.
Forget eggs, we got tails!
Somewhat sad at the lack of Gem Dragonborn Ancestors. Looks like I won't be able to shift over my favorite character to the 2024 rules. I guess I can just flavor them as gem dragonborn.
There’s nothing you need to change. Just use the old rules.
The extended rules (as in Fizban in this case) are there for a reason, you can continue to use them.
For some reason the options dont appear even with the settings enabled. Idk what's up with that
You know there is nothing here that says anything about tails.
In at least one of the pictures in the new players handbook there is one depicted with a tail
I really like the gem dragonborns and I am supprised that they are not here.
They were introduced later on in 5e's life so they might make a book adding gem dragonborns
We can fly now
names? or do I go to the old PHB for those or should my dragonborn be called Jeff?
How long do they live, it says for almost every other race
I cannot believe this is still a conversation. Just give your dragonborn a tail then. Damn
old 5e rules state:
"Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80."
I would just play using that material until they update.
okay... but how long do they live? Skin colors, horn colors, etc? Where is the detail?? The flavor???
I was just wondering
Honestly the gem dragonborn is not too different from the new one. Just have your flight be increased to 10 min and give yourself darkvison and boom you've adjusted it to be the same as the new one.
2024 Dragonborns finally get the love they deserve! If you are playing a class that gets extra attack it is easily one of the best species for those type of classes. Definitely S tier for fighters, paladins, barbarians, valor bards, monks, and even rangers. Everything is A tier. So glad dragonborn finally got darkvision!
Fizban's Treasury of Dragons is already there. I bought it already but I can't use the digital options? That's gotta be fixed.
I don't know why they still can't get Dragonborn right.
2024 comes the closest, and I'm super thankful for all the changes. The only problem left now is how low the breath weapon's DC is. CON is nobody's primary stat, and even at low levels the breath weapon is underwhelming. With the mediocre DC and the small boost in damage, I never feel like an intimidating draconic force of nature. Any weakling with a low-level spell or potion is more impressive than the spawn of dragons. I play dragonborns only for the roleplay, which is super irritating.
It's an unspoken crime that in a game called dungeons and dragons, the dragonborn get so little love.
