The spell captures some of the incoming energy, lessening its effect on you and storing it for your next melee attack. You have resistance to the triggering damage type until the start of your next turn. Also, the first time you hit with a melee attack on your next turn, the target takes an extra 1d6 damage of the triggering type, and the spell ends.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the extra damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.
* - which you take when you take acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage

Posted Aug 11, 2022It is resistance, that text is just flavor on the spell. The next line says "You have resistance to the triggering damage type until the start of your next turn" as a result of absorbing some of the incoming energy.

Posted Aug 22, 2022I am currently playing a Druid with the Grim hollow where wolf transformation, while in where wolf form, you can still cast spells but only if they aren’t concentration. What I’m getting at here is where wolf with FIRE/LIGHTNING CLAWS.
edgy but so cool ;-;

Posted Oct 9, 2022No, it would not stack - you can't stack resistances in 5e. because the wording states "You have resistance to the triggering damage type until the start of your next turn" rather than you absorb half of the incoming damage from the triggering damage type. Spells or abilities that state that you take half damage, like Uncanny Dodge for rogues, would stack along with a resistance e.g. tiefling rogue gets fireballed, takes 8d6 worth of damage, halved to 4d6 for fire resistance, halved to 2d6 if using uncanny dodge.

Posted Jan 8, 2023well, cold damage would work, but with bludgeoning damage, you're taking damage from being hit really hard with a blast of water. Basically, it's being sprayed with a fire hose. Fire damage is being set on fire, but bludgeoning damage isn't being set on water.

Posted May 9, 2023It's unclear how much damage it absorbs, how much damage the caster stops taking. Can anyone inform?-

Posted Jun 23, 2023There is no "water damage" type. Water-related spells are usually dealing cold damage (which could trigger this spell) or bludgeoning damage (which could not).

Posted Jul 26, 2023Best use of this spell is for a magic tank (like an eldritch knight) to deal with friendly fire from allies' spells. Like if the tank is getting flanked by two enemies, the caster can cast fireball or another AoE spell to hit both enemies instead of just one. The tank will be caught in the middle but they will take 1/2 damage, possibly 1/4 damage if they make their save. Plus they get a little damage boost to their next attack. Obviously this tactic should be done early on in an encounter when the tank is close to full hp and a lot of enemies can be hit in the AoE.
Saving this spell for when the enemy uses an elemental attack is situational and will not happen every encounter. And monsters that specialize in an elemental damage type usually have resistance or immunity to that type as well. Having resistance will definitely help, but you lose out on getting a damage boost.
