You unleash negative energy toward a creature you can see within range. The target makes a Constitution saving throw, taking 7d8 + 30 Necrotic damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.
A Humanoid killed by this spell rises at the start of your next turn as a Zombie that follows your verbal orders.
This says sorcerer warlock wizard then sorcerer warlock wizard again, may want to fix that
There’s in essence two of each class. The 2014 and 2024 versions
that’s why the three classes are listed twice
The 2014 version of Finger of Death was super disappointing; it did less damage than Disintegrate (which was a level lower) and had a saving throw most enemies were likely to resist. So, you can imagine how much my disappointment grew when I learned that the 2024 version functioned exactly the same as before. Even just bumping up the flat damage bonus from 30 to 40 would have been a major improvement; it still would have done less than Disintegrate, but only by 4 points, which is negligible as far as I'm concerned.
But nope. They just removed the lawyerspeak from the description and called it a day. Whee...
This does have two advantages over Disintegrate:
Beyond that, though, I'd agree it's a little underwhelming.
Don't forget that Finger of Death can also give you a Zombie minion that is permanently under your control.
That's certainly true, though a single CR 1/4 minion may also be a little underwhelming at the level you'd have to be to have access to this spell.
Yeah but you can get as many of them as you want. For example during downtime you can say you're going to build a zombie army by camping near some Orcs or something (there are plenty of low level monsters that a character with 7th level spell slots could easily beat) and casting this spell on one of them as much as you can. Even if you can only cast it once a day with 100 days worth of downtime that's 100 zombies that you can use however you want. If you get someone to bring you these creatures (at this level putting out a bounty for live Orcs should be more than affordable) you can actually do something else in your downtime since the spell itself only takes 6 seconds to catch. It can also be argued that zombies can be used as a workforce with someone giving them orders which would maybe not be helpful in adventuring but a farm or mine worked by hundreds of zombies would give you free labor. So I'd say the free zombie is more than strong enough all things considered. If it was something like a Ghoul you could have a hoard of hundreds of Ghouls which would obviously be insane even at level 20.
I dont understand why this cant be scaled.
