Charmed
One creature you can see within range makes a Wisdom saving throw. It does so with Advantage if you or your allies are fighting it. On a failed save, the target has the Charmed condition until the spell ends or until you or your allies damage it. The Charmed creature is Friendly to you. When the spell ends, the target knows it was Charmed by you.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. You can target one additional creature for each spell slot level above 4.
Cool just wish you could make it permanent or up casting was good
Suggestion is a 2nd level spell that applies the charmed condition, doesn't explicitly let the target know you charmed it, and lets you tell it to do probably anything a friendly creature would agree to.
Unless you are a druid, is there any reason to take this spell now?
Suggestion is concentration though, but it's still extremely powerful for a 2nd lvl spell...
This spell is fine though, considering the power lvl of most of the other lvl 4 spells
Well, Charm Monster can be used on anything that isn't immune to charm, while Suggestion is also limited to creatures you share a language with.
And to add to that, everyone gets fewer language proficiencies in 2024 due to the character creation changes.
Another difference is that suggestion forces them to do a specific thing then it ends and it doesn't change their opinion of you, while Charm Monster makes them like you and lets you interact freely with the creature until it ends.
Just for the record, most 2024 characters will have more language proficiencies than 2014 characters. All 2024 characters get three languages to start with, while most 2014 species only provided two and only a few of the backgrounds offered additional ones.
That said, you're right that Charm Monster is a very different spell from Suggestion if you actually read what both of them do, and the fact that Charm Monster doesn't require Concentration is also a big deal.
I know 2014 races usually got 2 language proficiencies and background could add 0-2 to that, aswell as (rarely) some from the class/subclass side of things (most notably Rangers).
But i did miss that everyone cross the board always gets 3 now because it was moved to the Creating a Character chapter instead of part of the options anymore. I really just looked though species and background options and wondered "where has all the language proficiencies gone in 2024?"
