Force
You create a floating, spectral force that resembles a weapon of your choice and lasts for the duration. The force appears within range in a space of your choice, and you can immediately make one melee spell attack against one creature within 5 feet of the force. On a hit, the target takes Force damage equal to 1d8 plus your spellcasting ability modifier.
As a Bonus Action on your later turns, you can move the force up to 20 feet and repeat the attack against a creature within 5 feet of it.
Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d8 for every slot level above 2.
This being a concentration spell is a big nerf from the previous edition, but now it scales way better with higher level spell slots.
Honestly, though i am sad about the change, I can understand why they added concetration to this spell.
True, I am glad that they didn't give it HP like in BG3 though
20 feet of movement in conjunction with concentration makes this not-so-good a spell. If War-Cleric couldn't cheese a non-concentration variant of this nobody would be using it over Spirit Guardians.
Spell description says it increases by 1d8 for every spell level over 2nd but on the character sheet it scales every two spell levels. Is the description wrong or is the character sheet?
This was a change made in the 2024 Player's Handbook. If your character is based on 2014 rules, then the character sheet is correct.
It requiring concentration now is indeed a fairly significant nerf, but on the upside it is now MUCH more powerful. +1d8 damage pr lvl above 2nd, not just every 2 lvls. Its maximum damage has changed from 4d8 to 8d8 maximum damage.
Honestly, I think it is a good change. It went from a "every Cleric uses this, because it's always worth it" to an option for Clerics who want to bash some skulls in.
The improvement to heightening means nothing if it competes with spirit guardians.
If I play a Hexblade or Bladesinger how can I learn this spell? It's weird that it's not available for those classes.
Multiclassing is really the only way to do that for those specific subclasses.
Can the weapon be moved towards and attack against creatures the caster cannot see? Or if the caster and the target are both in darkness, can the weapon be placed next to the target even though the caster cannot see where the target is?
I think it would follow the standard rules for attacking things you can't see: you have disadvantage on the attack roll, and you automatically miss if the target isn't in the location where you think it is.
This spell doesn't give you the ability to see or know the location of creatures that you otherwise couldn't, if that's what you're asking.
Do i understand correctly that the bonus action includes the casting as well the attack with the sporitual weapon? so u still have your action available?
That's correct. You can attack with the spiritual weapon as part of the bonus action you use to cast the spell, and then again as a bonus action on later turns until the spell ends. Those are all bonus actions; you can use your action on any of those turns to do anything else you might want to use an action to do.
I feel like this is only good because it takes your bonus action to cast and hit. The range isn't even as good as other spells and doesn't even do much damage.
Just a quick question, if I make the spiritual weapon a broom, can I fly on it?
No. The spell explicitly defines what you can do with the spiritual weapon, and using it like a flying broom isn't on there.
Spells only do what they say they do.
