Why is this concentration?!?!?

All of the Detection spells are concentration.  I don't see much of a problem with it since they're not spells you'd likely cast in combat and you can cast them as rituals so you don't necessarily need to burn the spell slot.

I think it's ridicules.  This is a spell you might want to cast right before combat or entering a door.  Thus any conc spells you might have going would get wiped before combat.  Besides it's a very specific thing your looking for.  Just seems too punitive to use. 

In the SPECIAL column in the Cleric spell list it does not show "M".

Then when I go into the spell itself it shows "M".

This is true of a number of spells in the special column in spell lists.

Is the special column in the spell list of any use if I have to go into each spell to find out the requirements?

 This spell's material component has no cost and is not consumed, so you can just use a spellcasting focus to avoid having to get the specific component. 

The special column only shows an M if you'd actually have to hunt down the component to cast the spell.
