
Little is known about the truth of your crime, even within the court of the local monarchy. Most of it has fallen to gossip and stories. But a grave crime it was, and with it comes the notoriety that rivals the purpose behind committing it.
You could have betrayed the crown in an act of treason, and defectors are hunted down and quickly slain. Maybe you broke a contract with a very powerful and very well-known industrial titan. Perhaps you took a personal offense to the head of the church.
If you are a traitor going on adventures, you have either somehow managed to keep your true identity secret from the greatest spies in the empire—or you are still active in the community, and your crime has yet to be discovered. In the latter case, you can work with your DM to figure out why you are traveling with outside adventurers.

You have a reliable and trustworthy contact who acts as your accomplice. You know how to get messages to and from your contact, even over great distances; specifically, you know the local messengers, corrupt caravan masters, and seedy sailors who can deliver messages for you. If you have contacts in an area, you can gain access to shortcuts and secret passageways.

Criminals might seem like villains on the surface, and many of them are villainous to the core. But some have an abundance of endearing, if not redeeming, characteristics. There might be honor among thieves, but criminals rarely show any respect for law or authority.
