You are among the common folk working at the local inns and taverns across several cities and towns, taking orders from willing customers and picking up the messes they leave behind. You aren't all too special to the world, being merely just another staff member to a just another place to get a hardy drink, but your career has gained you insight on a thing or two. You might not be an Artisan for a guild, or the part of the area's local watch, but you know how to get around the place.
You know the common folk well; how they act, what they eat, what they tell each other, and so on. You've seen several different faces across your time, and you blend with the crowd as a simple laborer. You know all the good recommendations on what to order and what drink is the best, and you have intricate knowledge on today's "Chef's Special" back in the kitchen.
- Skill Proficiencies: Medicine, and your choice between History or Insight
- Tool Proficiencies: Brewer's Supplies or Cook's Utensils
- Languages: One of your choice
- Equipment: A bucket, a well-worn mop a cleaning rag, 2 bars of soap, a notepad, a bottle of ink, an ink pen, a token left behind (a frivolous handkerchief, a strange-looking coin, or a trinket), a set of common clothes used as a uniform in your profession, and a pouch containing 10 gp.
You always seem to have a great story to tell from your career. To determine your tale, roll a d4 or choose from the options in the table below.
d4 |
Tale |
1 |
You've seen and been involved in plenty of brawls, and once had to tend the wounded. |
2 |
A colleague once bribed their way to the top employee position at the bar you worked for. |
3 |
The bar you worked at was raided or attacked by a local Thieves' Guild or another group, and you were forced to flee. |
4 |
You witnessed the miracle of magic from a Bard while on the job. |
You've heard it all before: "Mrs. So-n-So bought a new dog without telling her husband.", "Mr. So-n-So broke his arm in a farming accident and can't afford the visit to a healer.", and so on. Because of your position in your career, you've become adept at gathering up information. If you are staying at a tavern, inn, or other establishment that hosts sleeping quarters or food and drink, you can mill around and easily eavesdrop to learn about something important. Your DM might rule that you don't understand the languages being spoken, or that you can't quite hear some parts of what people around you are saying due to the clamor of talking.
Suggested Characteristics
Waitstaff typically your standard worker you'd find at an inn, taking your order or checking you into a room. They could have a secondary motive, or they could just be your friendly neighbor down the block, but one thing's for sure is that they'll get the job done, no matter the Fireball.

Perhaps rather than working around a bar or tavern, you owned the location and ran it. You've seen the ins and outs of a business flourish, though not like an Artisan; you know how to build from the ground up, and truly make something of yours. It has been rough through hardships, either due to financial complications, incompliant, aggressive, or otherwise barely manageable staff, or rowdy patrons taking a bar fight too far and forcing you or another member of your staff to intervene, but through it all you've toughened it out and perspired. For why you might've started adventuring if you take this variant, perhaps your establishment was unfortunately shut down, or it was otherwise destroyed by mayhem and havoc.
Rather than proficiency with Brewer's Supplies or Cook's Utensils, you might be proficient with Calligraphers Supplies or an additional language. And instead of a Cleaning Supplies (Mop, Cleaning Rag, Soap, and a Notepad), you can start with a set of Calligrapher's Supplies or another type of Artisan's Tools that fit your character.
