The Heartless Image

"The worst part about it all, is the way that it changes who you were. I weren't always so mean, me crew liked who I was and I looked out for my men. But after cutting it out and livin'. I started to change. They saw that, 'nd that's why they mutinied. I don't blame 'em though. I've had all the time in the world to better myself since then"

Too see a warrior or adventurer scarred from battle is a common sight, even simple workers can find themselves in hazardous situations from time to time. But let it be known, should you come across one whom has a scar over their heart, not all of them may be as they seem. The heartless live upon a fine line between both life and death, never able to truly die yet not truly living either less you kill the heart they cut out.

Those who are heartless are changed from who they once were, a compassionate kind man may turn bitter and mean; where as a marauder intent on the slaughter may find his bloodlust sated or not what it once was. To lose your heart is to lose a part of whom you were; even if they who are without heart maintain who they were, they will never truly be the same.

The Heartless at their core are secretly a tortured soul. Food loses its taste, drinks become little more than a cooling sensation down their throats, and the pleasures of the flesh can feel so distant one may mistake it for a dream. Though each one is unique, none are the same as others. One may forever taste the bounties of food and drink while the other can never again know its taste.

Not all Heartless become who they are out of self doing. Some are forced into it, by almost any means imaginable.

Feature: Unkillable body

Having cut out your heart has made you nearly unkillable, the only true way to put you into the grave is to kill your heart directly. However your body is still susceptible to damage and great harm, you won't grow back a limb if its cut off, so be careful.

Upon taking fatal damage and failing death saving throws you are instead deemed unconscious for a time equal to damage greater than HP lost. If damage greater than HP loss is 0 roll 1d4 hours.

Suggested Characteristics

Have your character possess a large scar across their chest or one that has long since faded into near obscurity. Possibly have them guard a chest or vessel of seemingly great importance.
