Artillerist or Battle Smith? I'm playing DoIP, and assume you only get one infusion. (Rest are distributed throughout party) It's 1-6. So I thought that Artillerist could just Flamethrow stuff around, but Battle Smith gets Sharpshooter and Smites. My race is a Half-Orc, if that matters.
For a half-orc, specifically, I'd recommend Battlesmith, since you'll be able to more easily benefit from your Savage Attacks feature, which can combine with your Battle Ready feature to attack with INT using magic weapons. If you keep your focus on melee weaponry, you and your Steel Defender can basically bum-rush enemies.
That aside, in general Artillerist is a bit better at burst damage than a Battlesmith. Also, if you're planning to distribute infusions to your allies, it's an easier class to take advantage of... you kind of want your own infusions a bit more as a Melee-focused Battlesmith, since you'll be relying on them more for damage and defense, but an Artillerist can more reliably avoid damage.
Battlesmith with sharpshooter. Take repeating crossbow infusion and use a heavy crossbow. Cast Faerie Fire and use the pet attack in round 1. It helps your party a ton and will also give you a lot of damage after round 1. It's the highest damage artificer.
Going Half Orc, another thing you could do is Great Weapon Master and be a melee Artificer to put Savage Attacks to use.
