Near the beginning of my group's campaign I had them find a map of the surrounding area. Thing is, it had a lot of information missing.
As they progressed, they've been asking NPCs about missing town names; or discovering the missing pieces themselves.
They seem to be having fun bringing out the map and filling it in as they go.
Manila Envelopes
The map I gave the players was just traced on a manila envelope I had taken apart. I loved what Seth Skorkowsky did in his handouts video. I just ran with it.
Missing Information
This was my first handout, so I didn't go all wild. I think the only thing I left out was the names of certain towns and landmarks. Otherwise, everything was still drawn in.
If I was to do this again, I might leave out some towns entirely and let them stumble upon them. Maybe a shortcut road.
I wouldn't put false information on the map. That's just bad form.
