So i'm helping out someone with making business cards that have NFC stickers on them. It allows who ever has one of the cards to tap it on to the back of their phone and it will automatically send them to their website, or YouTube channel as of right now.
I have more on the way with extra's since we over ordered on them and after writing allot of them of them i had this idea of somehow writing my character sheets on to their own custom cards.
I was also thinking about item wise as well since i am the DM at the moment and i could hand people mystery items with their own art and everything, but for now im just going to focus on character sheets for the moment.
For now all i can do is plan it out until i get the rest of the nfc's but im still wondering if i would have to use a web link to have access to my character sheet or the nfc can really store that much info on to it, which i dont think will work.
Until i can really get to work on this, any idea's or suggestions?
You should be able to put the entire sheet on the tag, if your tags can hold that much data.
If you have the 48 byte ones, probably not. The 800kb ones should be fine. You'll need to change the file each time someone wants to change something though.
By itself, showing a web page or a small document (like char sheet) is going to be the most it can do for the most part. Well, You can also set up secret messages for your players as well, and just have them scan the tag when you want.
If you add in other apps into the mix, though, then we have some more options. Nfc trigger, Tasker, and ifttt can combine to do some neat stuff.
For example, have a tag that you can scan on your table that automatically connects your phone to Bluetooth speakers and plays a specific song or sound effect (npc screaming in pain, bats fleeing the area, etc.). Have another one that will use an random number generator and pull up a list in a table based on that number for quick answers to "what did my wild magic do this time" or "what is in the chest". Get crazy and have smart lights or smart outlets and have dynamic lighting for certain events.
I know if one instance where someone set up five tags for each player, and at seemingly random times she would look up their passive perception and put their phone over it, which sent a premade text to that player's phone to clue them in on what their character noticed, instead of verbally telling all players and having them act like they didn't just hear.
Similar setup for insight checks, but that had to be more simplistic like "that's a lie", or "they seem totally honesy" instead of anything specific.
Only downside to the option of using other apps in combination is that they typically will mean only you and your devices will be able to trigger those actions, unless you set them up on the other people's devices, or share your custom tasks with them.
