so i have a question on what would be a good leveling route for this multiclass, i am thinking of stopping fighter at lvl 3 at putting the rest into barb, or would stopping at barb lvl 3 and continuing with fighter be better. my character is a goliath who mostly acts as the guy that keeps the enemies away from the squishy damage dealers. any advice would be appreciated.
I would go Rune Knight primary with Ancestral Guardian as a 3-level dip. Rune Knight has some really great benefits, and even gains protective abilities similar to AG Barbarian, but gains those in addition to the benefits of the runes. So the Spirit Shield has an equivalent ability in Rune Knight that can be used to protect your allies, and the Consult the Spirits feature isn't particularly great... it's kind of interesting to gain a way to cast spells as a Barbarian, but odds are good you'll have someone else in your party who can accomplish similar functions more efficiently than you could.
I tend to prioritize hitting your Extra Attack as soon as possible for any martial character, so I would take Fighter to level 5 just to get Extra Attack, then taking your 3 level Barbarian dip, then go back to Fighter the rest of the way.
I'll be honest, though... I think they don't pair well together. Both Rune Knight and Barbarian get a damage boost/STR Advantage "transformation" that takes a bonus action to trigger, and while it's nice to be able to double up on them, you would function perfectly fine with just one or the other.
Additionally, taking martial adept and superior technique style to get maneuvers helps. Get ones that let you move allies or help your party. You're basically trying to keep the squishies safe.
