Hello everyone, I am loving my world tree barb, this is my first pen and paper game but have been playing and reading D&D stuff since I was a teen. I rolled REALLY good and therefore have tried to take more of a backseat with my damage. My party did not roll that good and I am just smashing things left and right while they are hardly doing any damage during fights. So I switched from the Maul to the sword and shield, I am the only damage sponge that we have anyways. I love mid maxing but that's usually because I play healers/bards type things. So the mid max doesn't feel so overpowered.
I am a lvl 5 Orc world tree barbarian:
STR 20/ DEX15/ CON17/ INT10/ WIS13/ CHA 11. Background Farmer for tough feat. For the feat I was able to get I picked Gift of the Chromatic Dragon. TBH I thought that the resistance lasted a minute not just one turn.
So in one more level I will have the World Tree "get over here" portal thing. Can someone help me with multiclassing. I was thinking of at least picking up 3 Fighter to get the subclass and they have the thing at Fighter 2 that lets you use a battle die to reroll a failed skill check out of battle. Or maybe a few levels of Cleric for heals/guidance. Rouge is another good option for backstab and whatnot. Also picking feats is a little tricky since a few of the better Barb/Fighter ones only let you increase STR but not past 20 and I didnt know that before putting my 18 + background +2 into Str.
Any help with what items I should be looking for, feats to get and mainly why I should or should not multiclass would be greatly appreciated. I know I want at least 1 more into barb for bringing them over but not too sure after that.
There are a couple of problems with multiclassing if you are using the PC day by day. If you make a 10th level character there is no pain.
You are 5th level, to get a feat you need to live through the drudgery and excitement of 3 more levels to reach 8th level barbarian. You also get the advantage on initiatives and the subclass bonus of doing opportunity attacks.
If you dip into fighter, yes you get some nice fighter aspects, but if you are a level 5/1 instead of getting a feat in 2 more levels, you have to wait for 3 levels. Assuming you don't split those levels. So you become a 5/4 character or a 8/1 character. You fall behind as you need 9 levels to meet what everyone achieved a level earlier. Now the mental anguish starts to hit as well. The single class PCs are starting to get more powerful as they reach into 10th and higher levels, but you are not advancing as fast as you are basically spending the resources a 10th level character spends to reach 11, but instead you are a more lower level.
Say you are 8/1 mix. Is the nice attributes/skills etc. a 10 level barbarian achieves better then applying the level to a low level multiclass level? It is really a personal choice. The big down side is playing week after week, and 2nd guessing yourself.
Sounds like you’re doing a great job adjusting your playstyle to balance the party, which is more than a lot of players think to do.
On multiclassing: Fighter dip can be solid, especially for Action Surge or flavor, but as Character77006 points out, be careful about delaying your Barbarian features. World Tree gets really fun between levels 6–10, pulling enemies is why I would personally choose the subclass. I had a player go barb 5/fighter 3 then rest into barb recently and they really enjoyed the character (we played from 1 to 13). But... that was on an Ancestral Barb and not a World Tree.
For feats, Sentinel is a classic that fits quite well with the other Battlefield control elements of the World Tree.
DnD Shorts does an insane Barbarian multiclass build, but it’s contingent on you being able to fly. If your DM allows you to purchase a broom though, this can still work. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1PN3Z5CvQrY
Many players forget the problem with multiclassing. I had so many players disappointed by some build they saw on YT but that only come online late game, after hundreds of hours of play... Good thing to mention.
Actually i still have to see a great multiclass build that is fun and powerful from star to finish if you start at level one. (Exception made of the first level fighter Spartan with protection feat or defense or 2 weapons dip for all the front load powers it offer for almost 2/3 class and builds, and even then i dont recommend a second fighter level.... Ok it s a hard choice...lol)
But the World Tree Barbarian is not one to multiclass.... This is maybe the best martial controller in the game, go with polearm master and heavyweapon Master, cleave or slow with brutal strike options and World tree almost infinite usage features, if the best full martial in the game
At the moment I am dumbing down my damage and taking mid feats. My stats are stupid good and I was doing too much damage compared to the party. So I was looking to do something more sword and shield. I have NOT multiclass yet and may not at all. I just figured since I was picking up sword and shield instead of the maul that I originally had picked that I could take fighter levels without loosing any of my "front line" stuff. So maybe if I dont multiclass what are some good feat options for a barbarian that do not exclusivly give stregnth. I already have a 20 STR. Also that will not make me use a two handed damage dealer.
In the story there is an "essence" material in the world that makes you stronger when you drink it. Then there is super rare special metal that you can channel this essence through. My DM made everyone a sword and because I said I would take a sword and shield to even out damage in the party and be more tanky when we need to be, he gave me a shield made out of that metal.. So now I am pretty much stuck with the sword and shield at least for now. Maybe I take the sharp feat and then later pick up greatsword mastery?
For sword&shield you will not have many great build and world tree is really not one of them.... Greatsword/hammer/polearm is the way to go. But hey if you have fun go for it !!!! This said i ll prefer beserker or even better a zealot for sword shield build
