Choosing Criminal as an Origin: Background allows a +2/+1 to abilities scores. Specifically, the wording throughout is:
"Increase one of these scores by 2 and another one by 1[...]"
Dropdown: "Increase two scores (+2 / +1)"
"Increase one of these scores by 2 and a different score by 1."
The order here of +2 first, then +1 is important... because the dropdowns directly below are in the wrong order! The first dropdown for ability score increase is to choose the +1, the dropdown below it is for the +2. I know this is super minor, and I know the dropdowns are even correctly labelled in the dropdown itself. But that took me a while to work out why I wasn't getting my +2 to Dex...
Also, when selecting Dexterity in one of the dropdowns, I would have expected the option to disappear from the other, much like choosing skill proficiencies. Currently, I can choose the same skill in both dropdowns and gain +3.
Finally... where did Criminal Contact go? This makes me so sad... one of my favourite RP parts of playing a Rogue, and now I specifically have to pick Baldur's Gate Criminal for it. Oh well.

No you don't. All you need to do is ask your DM, "hey, can I have a criminal contact? Let's hammer out some details together," which is probably not going to be much different from how it worked before anyway. It's just not in the book anymore, like all the other background features which relied on the DM providing suitable things (and if they didn't show up, you're out of luck).
Yeah, it looks like the RAW mechanics of Criminal Contact have been removed in favour of the more gamified Alert (Initiative Proficiency and Initiative Swap). But you're not wrong, and that is indeed close to the exact convo I had with my DM - "Hey, when I started designing this char initially, I had X NPC as my contact in my background. Can I keep them?" "Yeah sure!"
But more importantly, the bug "report" is for the drop downs being the wrong way around! And that's just plain wrong.
