I finally have a character concept that wants to use True Strike, but realized there's no way to cleanly make an action for it.
Custom Action: limited to 1 type of damage die, won't work if I use a longsword or anything else without a D6 for damage.
Feat: same problem as above.
Item: can't make it use the casting stat for attack/damage.
Cantrip: can homebrew the correct damage dice, and correct stat, but doesn't work properly with a +X Weapon. I can add the extra to hit in the character sheet, but extra damage applies to each die type separately. I can add the extra damage properly in the homebrew cantrip, but can't boost to hit in the homebrew tool.
I eventually had to combine the damage boost in the homebrew cantrip with a manual to hit boost in the character sheet, but it's a really clunky way to get around limitations that shouldn't be there in the first place. The PH 2024 has been out for over half a year at this point and even basic bugs are still unfixed (not just this, the paladin channel divinity bug can be fixed by renaming 1 feature and it still hasn't happened).

I have not used the True Strike Spell, but it seems pretty simple, and I believe you might be assuming the info in the spell incorrectly, or maybe I am :)
Per the spell's description, this is what I am understanding:
"you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell’s casting": You make an attack with any weapon and cast the spell as you do so.
"The attack uses your spellcasting ability for the attack and damage rolls instead of using Strength or Dexterity.": As it is assumed that you are a caster with low Str and/or Dex, it lets you use your Spellcasting Ability for the bonus to hit and bonus to damage.
"If the attack deals damage, it can be Radiant damage or the weapon’s normal damage type (your choice).": You can choose to deal normal weapon damage (slashing, piercing, bludgeoning) or change the damage type to 'Radiant'. The damage of whatever weapon you use is the normal damage die (d6, d8, d10, d12, as it doesn't state otherwise), plus your spellcasting ability.
"Whether you deal Radiant damage or the weapon’s normal damage type, the attack deals extra Radiant damage when you reach levels 5 (1d6), 11 (2d6), and 17 (3d6).": As you level up, the spell deals an additional d6 (or number of d6) damage, in addition to your normal weapon damage die (d6, d8, d10 or d12), dependent on what level you are.
So if I am reading the spell correctly, you can use this spell with any weapon, not just weapons that deal d6 damage, as the d6 damage that is listed, is only listed for characters above the basic required level.
I know I didn't address your other points, but thought I'd start with the first one, as it seemed to lead to the others.
Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
I think you massively misunderstood the problem. The part you quoted is the problem with that method of implementing a True Strike action. A custom action doesn't support multiple die types, so it would only work if I used a D6 weapon. With a longsword for example I can't input both the D8/D10 from the sword and the 2d6 from casting True Strike as a level 16 character.
Also, in case anyone wonders why I'm building at level 16 this is a rebuild of an existing Adventurer's League character (I won't go into AL rules in detail, but it's possible to decline levels and park a character at the level you like playing at).
Solution: Do a regular roll of the weapon, and have a custom action of just the additional damage for True Strike. It's two buttons instead of one, but it solves the issue.
