What are your wildest and most outlandish fantasies of artificer subclasses. What if the artificer wanted to make his body his master work(like the blood hunter mutant)? Could an artificer unlock what makes other classes work and borrow a mechanical form of some of the major classes gimmicks like ki and wild shape?
A great idea I think that could be brained stormed for an artificer is a class that leans into one aspect of the class that only bards ever explore, a jack of all trades. Maybe he gains half proficiency in all skills as his first ability. The ability to store special features of rage or second wind that is bumped into his storage that either the specific class or you, yourself can take advantage of. The ability to maybe siphon the power of an opponent as I ether temp HP or (at the Dms discretion) a power of that creature.
I think something interesting would be a Necromancer-styled Artificer. A sort of "Dr. Frankenstein" archetype with a focus on building flesh golems of some kind. I suppose that might work as a reskin of the Battlesmith, but it would be cool to have rules in place for body harvesting. Maybe even give them unique infusions that they can apply to their flesh golems.
I would like to see a trap/single use item artificer.
you make traps/offensive options like bombs or debuffs. Mad Scientist approach.
I'd be hesitant to ask for that because then it kind of sets it up as something that would be exclusive to that subclass... but honestly I think any artificer should be able to craft single use items like traps or bombs. I think it would work if there were more hard and fast rules for crafting certain items and just give this subclass the ability to either craft faster, or have more variety. Sort of like how all artificers eventually gain the ability to craft magical items at a drastically reduced rate and cost.
It would be niche to an extent, but I feel like an Artificer capable of constructing a mechanical mount or vehicle for the party to use. Kinda get the vibe of a "car guy" in the Forgotten Realms and build something similar to the Apparatus of Kwalish but with interesting and unique "upgrades" along the way for better mobility, siege capabilities, or weaponry.

I would also be 100% behind this being a Optional Class Feature ala Tasha's for Artificer.
Thematically I think an Artificer who specializes in visual art could work. Sculpture, painting, calligraphy, mosaics, and the like? I'm not sure what it would do mechanically, but probably something along the lines of communication at low levels, illusions at mid levels, and mind control at high levels?

Honestly that brings up an interesting idea. Since each Artificer subclass grants a tool proficiency, I could see new Artificer subclasses which are each themed around which tool they get proficiency in at 3rd level.

Maybe call it the Artisan. Or ooh, the Aesthe ... -tician? Nah, sounds too much like a hairstylist ... -tologist? Has potential, makes it sound like the science and philosophy of the meaning behind beauty ... -turgist? Oooh, that sounds pretty cool. Aestheturgist! Is that too esoteric?

I think it would be super interesting to introduce some Infusions that can be applied to vehicles to accomplish something like this. Like... maybe something like "Self-turning Wheel", which can allow a vehicle to move without requiring a beast of burden to pull it, maybe giving some additional bonuses to the vehicle's AC and maybe give it some form of attack. Making it an Infusion means that, if you're spending an extended period of time away from your vehicle, you can simply choose to let that infusion fade and focus on something else.

Thematically that sounds like a cool infusion, but mechanically all you're doing is making a vehicle into a different kind of vehicle. Vehicle stats are already kind of vague in D&D so this sounds like a mechanical dud to me, unless it granted some other cool benefit. Double proficiency to handling rolls maybe?

Maybe a saddle infusion that grants some sort of bonus to the rider's AC or saving throws while mounted. Or some reins that grant a bonus to a rider's attack similar to the Charger feat

Oh yeah, there definitely needs to be more than what I suggested, but I think these sort of... "non-equipment" infusions would be interesting to explore. Like... most people aren't going to want an infusion that, say... beefs up security in a house in some way, but for that 1% of players building a trapmaster who's challenged to protect a single location regularly, it could be a ton of fun. I think that infusions intended for mounts and vehicles would be really cool and, to tie this back to what this actual thread is about, I think it would be a good way to allow some unique Artificer Builds without necessarily needing a full subclass.

The woodcarving one has abilities with no relation to woodcarving, so while I agree it's likely they'll continue the theme of subclasses unlocking a specific tool proficiency, it doean't necessarily follow we can extrapolate to how the subclass will work.
I'd like to see an Artificer subclass that drives a mech suit. Right now the closest we we have is a *bard* - creation bards get a custom flying mech for an hour a day. I'd like an artificer subclass that leans into that as hard as possible.
Mechanically, it would be between an armorer and a battlesmith - I'm imagining something more akin to wild shape than anything else. The artificer's construct is just an inert suit with the three physical stats until the pilot climbs in and gives it mental stats, and then the whole thing runs around doing mech things.
I finally remembered a concept I had a while back and have started working on adding some details to it. Started as a niche playstyle, but I think it could work as a whole subclass if balanced properly and some added fluff.
Themed around "Merchant of Death", based on having more infusion slots, handing out items, and receiving some sort of kickback "aura" of as an odd type of support-oriented subclass.
I was thinking about the same thing, "Arms Dealer". The class is based around having more infusions but "has" to give them to his party opposite of armorer, doesnt have to wait to level to switch out infusions, expanded infusion list for the subclass only.
Jewelry based (Precious Metals/Magic Material) make rings/amulets/belt buckles/ear rings/bangles/necklaces) that do certain things and give bonuses based on Auras similar to rune knight but instead of buffing the character it buffs the party.... add more reaction/bonus action options.
Augmenter.... enhance body parts. Similar to Totem Barb... pick from a suite of body enhancments.... eyes/legs/arms/brain etc.... lvl lock some enhancements
Maybe a class that is a bit like armorer, except instead of an armor you’re infusing and upgrading a construct
Actually, that has me thinking... can a Battlesmith's Steel Defender attune to magic items?
Part of me has thought it could be fun to allow a Battlesmith to forgo an ASI for itself to give the ASI (or a feat that makes sense) to its steel defender as an optional rule
