I am using an artificer I made for a campaign I ran named Bork Nork (the science orc). I had just bought the artificer class and it was fun to play with as an npc so I made him for the new campaign I am in.
my issue rn is that the artificer table says I should only have 2 cantrips and 3 first level spells at level 4, but on the character editing page it lets me add up to 7 first level spells. I made a new artificer to see if there was an issue and on there it only let me add 2 first level spells. Anyone else know what’s up or having a similar issue?
Hi there ArcticDrakeK! I like your character's name!
The table you're speaking of shows you how many cantrips you know (which you can cast as often as you like), and then shows you the levels of spell slots your character has, which is how many spells you can cast each day. So in this case, you can cast up to 3 first level spells between each long rest.
The number of spells you can prepare however (which you can change each day) is determined by the rules presented in the Spellcasting trait of the class, which reads:
You prepare the list of artificer spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the artificer spell list. When you do so, choose a number of artificer spells equal to your Intelligence modifier + half your artificer level, rounded down (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
This means that at level 4, you can prepare 2 + INT spells! If you have an Intelligence of 16, for example, that would mean you could prepare 2+3 = 5 spells each day! You then have three "spell slots" which you can use to cast those spells, so you could cast the same spell three times, or different spells with each slot. The slot isn't assigned to a spell until you decide to cast it.
On top of those spells spells you prepare above, you are going to have some spells that are "Always Prepared" coming from your subclass, which at 4th level will be two bonus spells of first level.
OH that makes so much more sense. Bork has a 20 in INT rn. okay that helps so much. thank you so much for clarifying. I was so confused as to why each character had different amounts of spells they could use.
