I've been tossing around the thought of a Half-Orc Battlesmith Artificer making his Steel Defender in the form of a Worg he was raised with. One day, some random adventurer killed the Worg and took its hide as a trophy, so the Half-Orc quests for the skin. He would then use it when making his Steel Defender to basically have his dog back. Might convince people he made a cyborg Worg.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
So back in our world in the 3.5 days I played an artificer styled wizard gnome that went on to create a college that teaches her style of creation, a lot of it started mechanical only, using magic to shape parts and what not than moved more into your typical D&D style artifce from a more steam punk start. Lotta magical leylines and runes to control creations and such. Now I'm looking at making a battlesmith from that college and found this picture while looking for steel defender ideas
Could not be happier, no idea what its from sadly but its exactly the kinda stuff my 3.5 character would be teaching people to create
Quick reverse google image search came up with this as the source: https://test.artstation.com/artwork/xzYOB1 Apparently some concept art for a Paizo Construct Handbook.
Couple of other pretty cool designs on that page too.

very nice, didn't really look for the source as it was what i was looking for at the time but that Steam Dragon and Automata Walker give me some ideas as well
We just started CoS and I was having similar struggle reskinning, but got it worked out. I’m playing a haunted one spirit medium and decided my defender would be “The Lantern Man”: a tall humanoid construct/cryptid with an ornate gothic lantern (tinkered object) for a head, a torso like a curiosity cabinet housing components, divining materials, etc., and limbs/appendages reminiscent of twisted filigreed wrought iron gating. When crouched, it can serve as an area for a seance or alter for a ritual. Additionally, I plan to riff off of the “bag man” concept, and store its haunting figure inside a case in which my artificer has lined with the bag of holding infusion...
I have a similar idea for one i am building, part time backpack part time exoskeleton (for any help actions etc) planning on him dropping to his own feet when combat engages.
was your dm cool with it and did you have any odd clashes with behavior, or awkward actions such as teleporting or group formation or anything?
Totes cool with it. It’s also been fun for RP when the random hand comes out and holds my PC’s pipe while he searches for something else in his pockets. Although my artificer created it using esoteric occult tinkering practices and marvels at its presence, he’s also kinda terrified of it at the same time. It has some kind of connection to the ethereal plane inside the bag of holding as well as a bizarre blood letting planchette (a haunted gift the DM gifted that is similar to the cube from Hellraiser) that is part of his tinkering tools/spell casting focus.
I was looking for inspiration,I just looked through the monster manual. Mine is a displacer beast mech controlled by my pet Ragdoll Cat (named Finnigan.).
I'm playing Ginko Stinkweed, a Forest Gnome Artificer, who's constantly assembling, testing, and dismantling various mechanical linkages during rests, and shoving them in his pack when it's time to explore.
He's always exploring and documenting new flora and fauna he finds on his travels through the forests (and, everywhere, really) so when he builds his Defender, it will be a mech Leafcutter Ant named Chomp.
I found this image that I'm using for inspiration...
My Artificer built his Steel Defender using his old ceramic plating that was removed when his "father" upgraded him with some hand crafted mythral plating. His name is Cat. My Artificer is not very creative.
I did have this little idea for an ego-centric, eccentric businessman who has aspirations for conquering the market under his glorious image.
Right now, he's been on the back-burner because I haven't determined if he would be a Bard, Wizard or an Artificer...
...but if he WAS an Artificer, he'd be a Battle Smith: and his Steel Defender would just be a mechanical version of himself, which spouts nonsense about improving workforce morale, philosophies that have been bastardized to be about corporate domination, and talking about what a swell a guy he is.
I read through this entire topic, and it seems like everyone likes gnomes as artificers. I love Tieflings, but I’m not sure if they are good for this class. Also, I am really stuck on what to make the SD. I was thinking a giant 6 foot tall land octopus, but maybe I should go with something cuter, like a bear. Any suggestions?

One of the nice things about Tieflings is the fact that nearly every subrace of Tiefling has access to expanded spellcasting that can help to compensate for the fact that Artificer's get relatively few cantrips and don't have as many spell-slots, since they're a half-caster class. By default Tieflings also get a +1 to INT, although different subraces have different options... although by default Tieflings get a +2 CHA, you can choose the Variant option to get a +1 INT, +2 DEX, which pairs great for a martial-focused character who still has spellcasting. All in all, Tieflings are actually one of the races that innately pair better with Artificer than a lot of others
As for your SD... I like the idea of a land-octopus. Maybe you can split the difference and have it be a quirky land-octopus with a big teddy bear head.

That sounds terrifying! Thank you for pointing out that it doesn’t have to be a normal animal. (I mean as normal as a 6 foot octopus can get.)
Hollow unbreakable arrows are the most OP common magic item, and my current method of coming up with insane combat shenanigans.
if you make a steel pipe with one end closed and a nozzle on the other, you can enlarge it, fill with any liquid, and then drop concentration, creating a high pressure squirt gun. (or a pipe bomb, depending if it holds)

A Cyworg? That's cool.

I've been kicking around a couple ideas for a Battle Smith and the main idea I've had for the Steel Defender is based on this guy: https://www.stonehavenmini.com/collections/construct/products/sh0369
A bit on the small side scale-wise, but mostly the look I want to go for.

That's cool. Is it like a wiry humanoid shape when it drops off your character's back?

Im about to go the Steel Defender rout myself and how i have mine is basically like space marine armor.

You could make it be some form of bipedal mech suit that you can go inside for protection, and it will defend you when you aren't inside it
