I am building a Forest Gnome Barbarian, path of the world tree for an upcoming campaign. At level one this guy will have advantage on Int, Wis and Chr saving throws and when he rages he will have advantage on Str saving throws. At level 2 he will gain advantage on Dex saving throws! Seems kinda unique and fun for a martial to be rolling two dice on most saves starting at low levels.
The change on heavy weapons to only require 13 str and not effect small creatures in a negative way also really opens up build options for a gnome barbarian. My build will have mastery in Glaive and Pike starting at level 1.
Minor Illusion and Speak with Animals will be great when not raging.
For background I'm going to go with Farmer for Tough as well as to fit the narrative of the build.
Looks pretty good short term. I see your genius with the advantage to 5 of the 6 stats. I guess my only question would be what your ling term plan is.
My guess is you would take a half-feat in strength, a plus 2 in strength, 2 plus 2s in constitution and whatever epic boom you’d like. The question for the most part is in what order.
I know some don’t like to plan that far ahead and try to let the adventure decide, but i feel like having a game plan is very important.
I’m also very curious, as I’m working on my first Barbarian (5e) and need to decide whether or not im using feats or maximizing my stats. So far I'm maxing my strength from 18 to 20 (rolled for stats), taking the tough feat and filling up my con from 14 to 20 (3 boosts). But I’m not sure whether or not to account for items in-game that boost stats or not.
I do like to build out to lvl 20 but I make sure I am fluid while I level up with my choices. I LOVE to build based on role playing and will sometimes make sub optimal choices due to an amazing RP situation.
As for my build out on 'Grimfall Talloak' it might look something like this:
lvl 1 mastery in Pike and Halberd
lvl 4 polearm master, using Halberd in combats with lots of targets (cleave) and pike in combats where I want to control/push targets into my buddies spell effects
lvl 8 +2 str or most likely Great Weapon Master
lvl 12 Athlete or +2 Con
lvl 16 +2 Con
lvl 19 there are so many good boons but I low key like Boon of Speed, +30 movement, bonus action disengage and auto slip grapples. Between teleporting via worldtree and 70movement barb with 20ft reach... nothing is safe! mwaahahahahah
Other ideas for feats would be to take Resiliency Wis, Int and Chr if I really want to be the guy that makes all the saves
Interesting. I’m still learning a lot about the new format, but it seems like a winner to me. I agree, that movement speed combined with teleportation and reach is excellent.
I'm still not sure if Polearm Master is as good now as it was by 2014 (Legacy) rules. I too am going World Tree, but I'm thinking more along the lines of battle field control rather than damage output since your vines are reaction based and would conflict with Polearm Master opportunity attacks. I was planning on using trident and shield for topple and maybe greataxe for cleave.
Don’t forget that Polearm Master atk is Bludgoning and can qualify for crusher in order to be able to knock an enemy 15ft. Into the air, backwards away from you and prone.

D&D, Youth Work and the Priesthood sadly do not typically interact... I do what I can!

My build will have between 3-5 attacks per turn by level 5 if the polearm master reaction attack triggers.
