I have recently created a tiefling bard named Ariaxora. She fits into a good amount of bard stereotypes, and has a fairly tragic back-story in which her lover (a bard) is murdered and she takes up his mantle. She also likes certain things that stereotypical bards like. Is this a good character concept?
I think so, as well as a good optimized character build anyways (tiefling bard). Just be sure to give her a goal/purpose for adventuring. Perhaps she’s searching for a greater power to possibly bring them back from the dead. Maybe she’s roaming the land searching for the murderers of her lover to get her revenge.
In any case, she’s picked up her lover’s mantle as respect for her lover whom she loved dearly and wishes to honorably remember.
I think Chaotic Good for alignment? Now that I've spent so much time making the character, I don't want to use her in the campaign I was going to use her in, because that campaign is with 2 first-time players, and I want to be able to play her for a long time. lol
Only you can really determine her alignment based on her ideals and what your going for with your character. I do think that’s a good idea to save her for a longer campaign. Typically people tend to put less thought and work into creating short term characters since there won’t be enough time for a character to develop as the story goes on.
I think either Chaotic Good or Chaotic Neutral. And I wasn't even trying to optimize for Bard. I made a Half-Elf Warlock today for this purpose, and his back-story paired with his character motivation is dark af. He is completely convinced that by converting people to his cult, he will be saving their souls, but he is actually dooming them to eternal suffering in the Nine Hells. He adventures to increase the number of believers, so that more people "are saved from endless torment." I am a bit concerned about the crap that I've been thinking about to make these characters cool.
Having an optimized build isn’t a bad thing, it helps your character fill out a role. Going too far would be something like maxing your AC so it’s impossible to be hit, increasing your attack in a single turn to the point where you’re killing the boss on the first turn, or making yourself pretty much unkillable. Also a half-elf is a good optimized race for the warlock class, half-elf just tends to be a very good race for any charisma dependent class and even some other classes as well.

I am preparing for the the mindf*** that'll eventually happen with the warlock.
