In Theros and other settings where religion is centrally important, be it in the form of ideologies, or its just clear that deities and other philosophical forces are shaping the world in a very real way, I'd like to more formally represent this in a balanced way that is available to everyone of that corresponding path/faith, similar to the deities of Theros giving a formal renown system that the DM can rely on. Yet the powers given just feels just too subtle, and it feels odd that a specific class like cleric in lore is vastly preferred even though some player's character of another class could be far more devote and in-line with the deity's ideals, not just in word, but in deed. Heck, they even seem to be the best fit to help whatever Chosen One quest they have, yet unless heavily reskinned, clerics are still given far more.
I've been looking to somehow just take out cleric directly and redistribute their powers in a semi-gestalt manner, but I'm having a hard time doing so. Does anyone have tips? Perhaps using domains and channel divinities for everyone? I'm just not sure. What I do know is that I want to reward players for actually opportunistically and actively advancing the causes of their faith in direct gameplay way.
