I'm playing a trickster domain cleric of Dionysus (the Greek god of wine and vices). My dm said we could start out with some minor magical items if we wanted to, and I was just curious as to if anyone had any ideas.
I've had ideas for fun or funny magical items (i.e. a neverending bottle of wine), but I wanted it to also be in some way functional. For the record, we are starting at level 3 and this is my first time playing a Cleric (idk if either of those things are at all relevant but I thought I'd mention them). We have our first session a week from today!
Edit: She also has an entertainer background (tbh I am a bard main but my party needed a cleric lmao)
I don't know the difference between major and minor items, but my first thought is that you could have a small sack of hiding instead of a bag of holding. The difference being that you could take an item in your possession and use the sack to place the item on somebody else's (line of sight) person, say a pocket or backpack. Another option, same idea, would be an enchanted shell game. For the game to work correctly, you'd have to tap the ball (say on a table) three times before placing the ball ... otherwise, the ball will always be under the last of the three cups picked. The set would require the ball and three cups and essentially teleports items from one cup to the third. Here is where it could be useful ... say you had distributed one of the cups to somebody else. The ball could be hollow and you could use the set to teleport something to the person holding the third cup.
Next idea, inspired by Harry Potter, have a gnomish remote lamplighter. Essentially the device would function like the Thaumaturgy cantrip but be limited to lighting effects and could completely extinguish and light existing non-magical light sources (torches, campfires, fireplaces, lanterns) and would still require 1 action to cast *and* the lighter, but anybody could use the gnomish remote lamplighter and it would free you to not carry the Thaumaturgy cantrip in your previous few cantrip slots.
(BTW, I'm about to start a Twilight Domain Cleric of Selune. I'm excited that she'll have the Thaumaturgy cantrip expressly to play light shows. My brother suggested she is Dazzler minus rollerskates and the cool leather jacket.)
Another one ... since you also enjoy bards, why not have a musical instrument, say a flute, that only really plays for you. But if somebody else attempts to use it, it will just sound broken ... but then steal their voice allowing you to mimic their voice for 1 round after you play the flute again. The flute can store any number of voices based on who it is attuned to ... but if the flute is *not* played once a week, then it will be unattuned and reattune to whomever beings using it (and it will work for them) for at least 1 round. It could have a name or connection to the bird people (I forget their race, but I think they have mimicking abilities).
You can have a LOT of fun with this, and I'll point this thread to my DM ... as I'd love to see some mostly harmless little minor magic items as well. (30 years ago his halfling at a +1 battle spoon of protection ... which I never really understood what it did, but assumed that if he ate things that were poisoned that he had a bonus on his saving throw ... his current character in another campaign is the niece of his original character and has a ring that was carved out of the battle spoon of protection ... I have yet to see if our DM and him worked something out in *their* session zero (which was just emails), but again I hope they did.
dionysus was at some point worshipped as a god of death and rebirth, so an flask of wine or booze that makes you pass out and temporarily visit the afterlife in order to talk to some ghosts might be fun, i donno this might be a bit too late to respond
