Ok so I'm starting a Spelljammer campaign next week and thinking about playing a druid. I feel Variant human is more optimal in terms of a build, but I kind of want to play a lizard folk and lean into a whole Space Godzilla theme (specifically at lv 6 with the Allosaurus)
Sadly, this gives me FOMO of missing out on a better build playing one over the other, so can someone please help me identify if losing out on an extra skill and feat really matter? I'll be playing 2024 Circle of Moon if that helps?
Play the character you want to play. Not every character has to be completely optimized. Often times it is better to lean more into the story of the character than the mechanics. A compelling character will be better at the table than a boring highly-optimized powerhouse.
Mechanically LIzardfolk is actually ahead on skills since they get their choice of two from a list of six while human gets only one.
Human: 1 skill, 1 language, 1 feat
Lizard folk: 2 skills from a list of 6 (all well aligned with druid) Hungry jaws - bite faces for temp hp PB times per day. Natural armor - better than studded on a dex build, not as good as medium armor Hold Breath - Can be useful in space Swim speed - check out the weightless combat rules. Swim speed is very useful.
Weightlessness
In any location where gravity isn’t present, the following rules apply:
Impeded Melee. When making a melee attack with a weapon, a creature that doesn’t have a flying or swimming speed (either naturally or provided by magic) has disadvantage on the attack roll unless the weapon deals piercing damage.
Movement. A creature can use an action to push off something heavier than itself and move up to its walking, flying, or swimming speed in a straight line. The creature continues along this course, moving in a straight line at its speed on each of its turns until something stops it or changes its trajectory.
