Pretty much any weapon, since they are proficient with all of them on the weapons chart.
I suggest that a fighter carry a few different sorts of weapons so that the player can switch things up to fit whatever situation they end up in; a bow for range, a reach weapon for tunnels, a couple light weapons so you can dual wield, something two handed for heavy damage option, and something like a longsword or warhammer to pair with a shield, plus daggers just in case you need to be able to hide a weapon on your person - and make sure to cover as many different types of damage as you can, just in case vulnerability or resistance comes into play.
A scythe looks cool and will seem unique so if it makes you want to play then use it. There will always be a "meta" for what is considered best, but you have to take your own desires into heavy consideration. Do you buckle and just "build" the same cookie cutter greatsword sword wielding, 2d6 throwing melee monster? These are very popular for a reason: They are fast to build and easy to play. This gives you more time to focus on fleshing out your characters background and maybe more time to focus on RP with your party.
The scythe is def. a unique choice, but unique does not mean useful. Also I do not believe there is a scythe in the D&D PHB, instead you would be using a 3rd party or "home brew" weapon found online. Consult the weapons table and look at what properties they give you (i.e. light, heavy, versatile, reach etc.) and always remember FIGHTERS ARE GOOD AT EVERYTHING! YOU ARE THE LIMITING FACTOR OF YOUR CHARACTER, NOT IT'S CLASS! :D
Another option is to take the best looking weapon (to you that is) and just say it is a scythe!
Example: Bob the Fighter is wielding a Halberd with the following weapon profile: 1d10 slashing dmge (like a scythe) with the reach property (you can attack/opportunity attack people an extra square away) and it also heavy/twohanded.
Bob the Fighter has already talked with his DM about "skinning" his halberd as a Scythe for aesthetic purposes and with everyone in agreement Bob the Fighter cuts a bloody swathe through the campaign with his "Scythe" that no one dare call a Halberd for fear of being "reaped".

Fighters can be good with pretty much any weapon :)
It really depends on how you use it. If you use it as a sword it won't work. But, as others have said, fighters can use pretty much every weapon.
I have wrestled Hellhounds and I have slain dragons, but that one kobold killed me with a dagger!! A DAGGER!!!!
