I was thinking about making a change for players creating fighters to give them more options. I wanted to let Fighters match their saving throw proficiency with the damage dealing stat. This would let Dex based fighters take dexterity as their saving throw proficiency and Int based fighters take Intelligence as their saving throw proficiency. I think it would reflect a character backstory more and allow for more varied fighter builds. Would this be too OP?
Swapping str for int as a save wouldn’t be too big a deal. But swapping str save for dex save would be very, very strong. Probably too strong. Every class (except monk eventually) gets one save in well used ability and one in a not often used ability. It’s an overall game balance mechanic.
And I’m not sure it would do anything to change builds. Are there people who say they want to play a dex fighter, but won’t because they don’t get dex saves?
Well, this is one of those cases where it's too OP because a fighter can actually be quite resilient when it comes to their saves. See, you could have an extra feat. Say you're playing a dex-based fighter gnome who takes the lucky feat at some point, and you have indomitable. Need to make a magic INT save? roll at advantage. Not enough? Roll lucky. Not enough? Re-roll with indomitable. This isn't even taking into account the possibility of taking the Resilient feat.
