Hey y'all, I wrote a few articles about Fighters for Gamers Decide, and now I get to share them around! They are my personal analysis on the best ways to build a Fighter from the most important skills to the most optimized race, and I would love to talk about it with you guys! I am open to other opinions, and I would love to hash out my thought process with you all!
The samurai is more than just "okay." It's absolutely top tier. Why? Aside from the fact that when built with elven accuracy and sharp shooter it produces some of the best burst damage in the entire martial meta, it also gets free WIS saving throw proficiency at level 7 and that fact alone is super crucial to martials for doing their jobs. That means that it never has to invest in getting the feat Resilient WIS, and thus frees up the slot for something else, either bolstering its offensive or defensive aspects even further than other fighter subclasses.
Sure, the samurai might not be flashy and have little interaction with things outside of using fighting spirit as their bonus action, but it's a fighter that is both incredibly hardy and hits incredibly hard where it matters most.
If you're ranking the subclasses using the 2014 rules, the Champion should never be recommended for levels 1-9 and the Banneret is barely ok. Additionally, the Battle Master and Eldritch Knight aren't fair to place in any one fixed position. For one thing they both have an insane amount of variation in their builds. For another, the Battle Master becomes much stronger when paired with a Rogue, and the Eldritch Knight depends a lot on which non-PHB spells are on the table and how good the player is at picking spells that will actually complement a Fighter's combat abilities instead of wasting slots on spells like Burning Hands.
Really, every 2014 Fighter subclass holds its own except for the Champion and Banneret, and imo players should pick more based on the concept. Plus the 2024 rules drastically changed the status quo (e.g. Champion is much better, Samurai can no longer obliterate things with Sharpshooter's -5/+10.)
