This are my two options I've given myself, which one has the better potential? I'm currently mixed and unsure which would be better. Both would be melee based. I do prefer a shield and sword, but am not against a two handed weapon. Can I use heavy armor as a Samurai?
Yes you can use heavy armor as a Samurai. I like the Samurai mostly for fighting spirit and the uniqueness of the subclass. Battlemaster is very effective too I just prefer the Samurai. I have one using a Great sword with GWM feat, that coupled with fighting spirit can really pile up damage.
I guess it depends on what you want to play. Battle master has a bunch of different tricks to use in combat. Samurai gives you some skill proficiencies that make you better out of combat, and a grab-bag of fighting abilities that kind of makes you tankier and does some other stuff. So battle master buffs you a lot in fighting, if you choose we’ll and play tactically. samurai helps you do things out of combat, and also gives a few buffs to fighting, that don’t require quite as much tactical choice.
For me, I love the melee fighters, but I'm looking for something just a small bit different. I'm playing a gnome cavalier now which is a lot of fun. As a result I want my back up to be a bit more than just smash and block.
Better potential for what? Aiding allies? Doing lots of damage? Being able to talk your way through certain situations? Personally I think the Samurai is a more interesting subclass due to what you can do with it roleplay-wise but Battlemaste is probably better for pure damage potential.

Always remember that, as Aasimar, it takes one full action to spread your wings!
