I have a Fighter Champion in my D&D campaign as my first ever character in the RPG experience. Got to Lv4 and had the ability to gain a feat. Initially i selected Magic Initiate (Wizard) so i can have some spells to use in case i couldnt get close to my target. My members in my campaign constantly said that i could not cast spells because "Champion Fighters are Magicless" and all would not allow me to use the spell.
Please can someone clarify if i can or cannot cast spells in this manner? I need to settled this before i advance any farther in my campaign
Yes you can. The feat gives you the option to cast spells from the selected class. I'll suggest getting a wizard and going for Find Familiar and some long-range damaging cantrip.
This feat doesn't have a prerequisite of availability to cast any spells prior, like spell sniper. So nothing stops you from doing it.
To clarify. Some Feats sometimes allow you to do thing you normally wouldn't be able to do. Like firing a crossbow more than once a turn or, in your case, use certain spells.
There is no rule that prevents a Fighter Champion from using magic or having spells. Multiclass and feat are specifically there for players who want to mix and match. And the entire purpose of the magic initiate feat is to allow people who might not have access to magic, to have a little bit. By the normal rules as written, a Champion can absolutely take the magic initiate feat. Though personally I would work it into your background to explain how or where your character was initiated or was exposed to magic.
And as suggestion above, consider the 'find familiar' spell for your 1sst level spell choice. :) Thought the Shield spell once a day is pretty cool too.
[edit ]One last note: A DM can always change or overrule all rules, so obviously if the DM decides in his world Champions can't uses spells, you are kinda' stuck.
So, if a Champion Fighter lvl 4 can use Magic Iniciate, then he/she could focus on 2 hand weapons and get some Protection spells. And then later, use the Abjuration school as the preferred one.
