Is it possible to expand the monk concept to a generic unarmed fighter? With decision points based on different styles of unarmed combat (grappling, striking, etc.). The current monk as a subclass. This could open up new possibilities, like a primitive warrior fighting unarmed.

From my point of view, the monk should be primarily an unarmed combatant. The problem with 5e is that weapons are so advantageous that the monk has to follow, and that is deeply sad. Here is a link to a homebrew of a monk who fights mainly unarmed. https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/2ih7HEGSdxmi
