I'm playing monk and my primal role a tank and single targets eliminations (for now at least). Recently the party gets 6th level and there is a question should I multiclass. Because of my tank role I'm considering a 3 lvl barbarian (Path of the wild heart).
On the one hand weapon mastery, advantage on dex saves and resist to almost all types of damage sound very good in other hands it's a three level which is a huge, besides weapon mastery I could get at lvl 8 from a feat, barb damage resistance do not cover all damage types (undeads are one of our enemies) and damage resistance monk will get itself on lvl 18 (which is far away but we plan play to lvl 20)
So does staying in one class is a good idea? Or multiclassing is must have for monks?
I recommend just one level in barbarian, as that gives you the best features of the dip.
Except the capstone and possibly a Boon. Since it is still arguable that you get it at straight 19th level or as long as your levels add up to 19. I think the latter is silly since, you could use the same argument for getting the capstone. Tells you what side of the fence I'm on.
I don't think anybody argues that you get it at level 19 like this. You do get at total level 20. Also, if you multiclass 4 levels in one class and 16 in another, you can get two epic boons.
Interesting... How do you get two? At 19the level you get an EB, but you don't qualify for another one until you both reach 20th level and gain 30,000 xp beyond the max 355,000 xp. And then it's 30,000 xp everytime after that.
You have to take the levels in the two classes in the right order to get this to work, but it does work. All classes have features at level 4 and level 16 (among others) that grant a feat, and with these features you can take any feat you meet the prerequisites for. If you reach level 16 in one class at the same time as you reach total character level 19, you can take an Epic Boon feat for that feature. Then, if you reach level 4 in a different class at the same time that you reach total character level 20, you can do it again.
Keep in mind that the level 19 feature does not, strictly speaking, give you an Epic Boon feat; it gives you a feat, and it can be an Epic Boon feat if you want because you are now level 19. But the prerequisite for those feats is not level 19 in a particular class; it's total character level 19.
Okay I got it:
Old class New class Total levels
16 1 17
16 2 18
16 3 19 (Epic Boon or regular Feat)
16 4 20 (qualify for Feat at 4th level originally, but now also for an Epic Boon)

No, not quite. To get this to work, you need to reach level 16 in one class at the same time you reach total character level 19.
When you are at character level 18, you need to have 15 of those levels in one class and 3 in another. You then take one level of each class (the order doesn't matter) for character levels 19 and 20.
Character level 19 is the prerequisite for taking an Epic Boon feat, but reaching character level 19 doesn't actually grant you a feat; only class features do this. In this example, those class features are granted at level 16 in one class and level 4 in another class. In order to take Epic Boon feats for both of them, they both need to happen when you are at least character level 19.

Well, the Astral Self subclass was written for the 2014 rules, so it's not surprising it doesn't interact well with the 2024 changes. Allowing the grapple/shove DCs to be calculated using Wisdom instead of Dexterity when you have the astral arms up would be a pretty reasonable homebrew update if you wanted to use it on a 2024-style character.
They say "backwards compatible" but it really isn't since a lot of DMs go by A.L. rules or are just reluctant to homebrew/adjust anything due to fear of unbalancing things (which is somewhat justifiable due to how many broken homebrews exist).
