I had a concept for a goblin that was a Spores Druid/Long Death Monk as it seemed both classes have the whole death and decay type theme. I was thinking of going at least 3 levels Druid and rest in LD Monk. I know it throws off progression in monk.
would this be something that would be decent ?(I know far from optimal but at least survivable?). Would a different split be better, maybe for the ASI?
thought maybe the spores part would be after he escaped enslavement by mind flayers in the underdark (figured there would be all kinds of weird mushrooms down there) and then monk would build off of that.
It's good, the small amount of 1& 2 lvl druid spells you get, the ability to use wild shape as more than turning into animals.
I would go for 3 levels of Gloom Stalker ranger instead of druid. you would get 1st lvl ranger spells, fighting style, extra skill proficiency, extra attack for the first attack, ability to hide in darkness from darkvision creatures.
I had considered gloomstalker ranger, but with the Way of Shadow Monk for a different build I was doing (I have a problem building characters I probably will never get a chance to play). Could work for Spores too. thanks for the advice.
This was my initial take on the build. Ended up taking it to 10th level, Spores 4/Long Death 6. Originally I had Primal Savagery for a cantrip, but swapped it out for Frostbite as I doubt I would use it once I started getting some Monk levels under my belt. Thought that Thorn Whip would be good to pull targets into range for Halo of Spores possibly boosted with Symbiotic Entity. Using Shortsword for my melee weapon attacks (with bonus damage from Symbiotic Entity) and either flurry of blows off of that (and have Fury of the Small to add more damage when I need it most) or use my Goblin ability to disengage or Hide without using a Ki point.
Speaking of other builds, your comment about Gloomstalker ranger had me thinking of another build, Hunter Ranger/Kensai Monk. With the dueling fighting style you get +2 to damage so versatile weapons really don't help so it opens up more variety so I took Morningstar. 1d8+5 (16 Dex +3 and +2 Dueling) compared to a versatile weapon 1d10+3 (dueling bonus doesn't apply if you use the weapon 2 handed) max damage is the same, but min damage is higher without the versatile.
Plus, an extra 1d8 per turn with Colossus Slayer ability with the melee weapon. Then can bonus attack or Flurry of Blows for more damage, Patient Defense or Step of the Wind if I don't want to take hits. Or, once extra attack kicks in, Agile Parry to boost AC.
Maybe even start out combat with Zephyr Strike so no Opportunity Attacks for the duration and 1 attack with advantage and and extra 1d8 damage, stacked with Colossus Slayer on that attack if it hits.
Halo of spores + noxious aura makes even getting into melee to this character a real problem for the enemy
Even better if you could discuss with your DM, that Halo of spores does poison rather than necrotic damage. Then it would also trigger the Hands of Harm x3damage

Would Shillelagh be worth it to have a d8+Wis Mod instead of shortsword, do you think?

How about spore druid/monk of Mercy.

I hadn’t even looked at that subclass as I wasn’t considering UA. Might have to look Thanks
