I'm currently a lvl 3 Fallen Aasimar Oath of Vengeance. I've been playing around with the idea of multiclassing into a rogue swashbuckler. Was thinking Paladin 12 Rogue 8 so I don't miss any ASI.
I'm not trying to do a maximized God tier build or Hexadin like I see alot of. It's more for Rp aesthetic.
I figured the Sneak Attack dice would be useful with smites. And story wise would expertise things like intimation, persuasion, insight and investigation.
Just curious if this could work, how I could maximize what I'm working with and where would be good spots to bounce back and forth with.
I should also note that I'm relativity new to the game.
Sneak attack requires a finesse or ranged weapon. Ranged and smite is right out, of course. Melee-wise, you’re likely to be using a str based weapon, considering your ability scores. You could use a rapier, which is a finesse weapon, and technically you can use it with str. But it’s a little cheesy to use a finesse weapon, but do do without finesse, just so you can meet the requirement. Your DM may or may not agree.
Anyway, that’s the biggest problem, sneak attack and smite don’t play well together. You could consider 2 levels of bard, if you’re looking to beef up your skills. With that cha, you’ll do well, and you’ll pick up more spell slots, which means more smiting. Won’t boost damage, but can give you more things to do.
As mentioned, smites and sneak attack doesn't really mix. That doesn't have to be a problem if you don't mind using a rapier. That said, since your powerbuilding I'm going to assume you're fine with that. I'm also going to assume that you actually want to multiclass rather than say just take the Skilled feat.
As for the level split I wouldn't worry about missing out on an ASI or two since you already have massive ability scores. Depending on what you want out of the classes you're probably better of doing a 11/9 split for more sneak attack and Rogue subclass feature. Is there anything in particular you want from Swashbuckler? Because I think inquisitive better suits the kind of character you describe.
You really shouldn't multiclass before level 7. That way you get both Extra Attack and Aura of Protection (probably the best Paladin feature).
