Here's the situation. You are an Oath of Redemption paladin. An enemy triggers an area attack that hits five of your allies for 30 damage each (a cumulative hit to your allies of 150 total damage).
You trigger your "Rebuke the Violent" ability on that enemy which reads - Rebuke the Violent - Immediately after an attacker within 30 ft. deals damage with an attack against a creature other than you, you can use your reaction to force the attacker to make a WIS saving throw (DC 13). On failure, the attacker takes radiant damage equal to the damage it just dealt, or half damage on success.
Does the enemy take 30 damage on a Wis save failure (15 if they save), or 150 damage (75 if they save)? The ability does read "....the attacker takes radiant damage equal to the damage it just dealt....". That could be quite the knockout punch when used in the right situation.
I haven't seen this asked in the forums yet. Has anyone dealt with this question?
Since it specifies "an attack", it may not be able to be triggered at all. However, if the DM wishes it, the reaction would only deal the 30 damage on a failure and 15 on a save. The text seems to specify a single ally.
