I've been having a discussion with my DM on the technicalities of the Volley multi-attack and I've searched the internet far and wide to find my answer but to no avail..
The Volley text states: "You can use your action to make a ranged attack against any number of creatures within 10 feet of a point you can see within your weapon’s range. You must have ammunition for each target, as normal, and you make a separate attack roll for each target."
Based on this text we can assume that it is only the point(centre) of the volley that the range can see not the enemies themselves, which would make Volley act as for example Fireball does.
However, when thinking about how the attack is made "to make a ranged attack" and "make a separate attack roll for each target" it should stop the Volley from hitting targets who might be behind let's say a wall, even though the centre point of the Volley CAN be seen by the ranger.
Now, apart from this. If the ranger fired the Volley inside a building where our ranger is in the west room A and there are enemies in the east room B connected with a 5by5 open doorway, who will get hit by the volley and how is the volley performed? I would imagine the Volley happens by aiming your bow up in the air and make the arrows come down on the enemies, but inside a building, the ceiling is stopping that from happening, and if the Volley is just shooting enemies straight on, wouldn't the front enemies block their friends behind them from being shot?
How have you resolved this and am I misunderstanding something about this feature?
Each attack from volley is made as normal, meaning the hunter needs to see the target, the target can't be behind total cover, other cover applies, and any other situations that exist for each attack apply. All volley allows the hunter to do, the only thing volley does different, is allow the hunter to make more than just two attacks, as it normally would with the extra attack feature. Volley doesn't work like fireball at all. Volley is a type of multiattack.
Think of it this way:
Extra attack = 2 attacks
Volley = 3+ attacks IFable, with only one attack per target when there are 3 or more targets within 10 feet of that point
