Hello All! Theory crafting here and want to get some fun thoughts on my character concept. Mind you all, this is not a min-maxed or even optimized character. I just want an excuse to pester foes with chickens.
The idea is that my ranger is a simple farmer, blessed by sylvan creatures with the ability to defend his crops. He/She'd be a VHuman so I can pick up a feat and humans are your vanilla race, perfect for a humble farmer in a world of crazy races and creatures. Class would be, obvi, Ranger with the Swarmkeeper archetype, having lil chickens as my swarm. I'd like to choose the Druidic Warrior fighting style so that I may pick up Shillelagh and one other druid cantrip. Why not pick magic initiate (druid) as your Vhuman feat for that 1st level druid spell? I'd like to use a quarterstaff as both spellcasting focus and weapon. I can get more out of feats like Polearm Master or Crusher. By picking Folk Hero as my background, I can get all of the wisdom skills and brewery kit proficiencies... he/she's gonna be a barley/hop farmer!
So my questions!
What first level spells mesh well with this? Absorb Elements, Entangle, Good berry, etc.
What other druid cantrip makes sense to pick up? Produce Flame for range and a torch for my non dark vision eyes, Mold Earth cuz farmer, Guidance cuz it should be used constantly but let's be honest it gets weird to have someone always touching everyone before they do anything... that just might be the COVID days talking.
***Also to note, I will be using Tasha's optional class features***
Speak with animals should facilitate some rooster hirelings. People sometimes forget you don't need class features to get followers if you're willing to put in some role playing. Beast bond is an obvious choice for combat once you have your trusty cock companion and snare has a lot of synergy with swarm keeper since you can set it up then knock them into it. Guidance is a good pick for second cantrip since you're going for something of a skillsy character.

Sweet ideas! Luckily with the optional rules for primal awareness a Ranger will automatically have them. Perfect for building a Cuckoo army.

Snare and Alarm are good defenses against intruders or predators that might've otherwise eaten the chickens. Speak with Animals is a given, as are Locate Animals or Plants, Conjure Animals (more chickens!), Plant Growth (second option), and Speak with Plants (how are you doing, corn? Need some more watering?).

Other druid cantrips? Have you ever had a chicken shake dust in your eyes?
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
This is such an amazing concept - I love it... would also work with a shepard druid I guess.
But I love the chicken swarm idea!
