As the title states, this is a thread to share your "Best of" moments with your Ranger. What have been great moments using a Ranger that will stay with you?
Right off the top of my head, I can think of two moments using my Horizon Walker and one using my Fey Wanderer.
Fey Wanderer: after getting her chain yanked around by a capricious pixie Archfey, my Fey Wanderer successfully used her charisma skills (specifically Deception and Persuasion) to convince the archfey to accept a "crown of roses" from her. In truth, it was a thorn crown made of cold iron that a wizard had enchanted to *look* like a crown of roses. As soon as the archfey put the crown over his head, he immediately began convulsing. The F Wanderer just left him to his fate. Who says you have to be a fey to be tricksy?
Horizon Walker:
1. The party had just been betrayed and ambushed by an evil artificer. Rather than let it slide, the H Walker cast Hunter's Mark to track the artificer to her lab. Thanks to Pass without Trace, the party was able to sneak into the lab without being noticed. The artificer was busy concentrating on some blueprints and her minions were also distracted cooking meth or something. Rather than engage them in combat, my H Walker remembered the hydrogen canister in her Bag of Holding. She snuck the canister next to a lit torch (again, PwT was invaluable,) and the party retreated to a safe distance. The warlock then lit one of H Walker's arrows on fire. She aimed it at the hydrogen canister and landed a Nat 20 on her roll. There was no combat. The Barbarian barricaded us from the explosion before the arrow hit and that's all she wrote. We've since decided to rename the now-charred artificer "Rotisserie." Lesson learned? Don't betray the H Walker.
2. The party had sent some NPC allies to request permission to access the archives from city council. Time passed and the allies had not been heard from. Worried, the party decided to send H Walker to investigate. She went to city council where, on a Nat 20 Survival check, she found signs of a scuffle and tracks leading away from the area. She followed the tracks until the trail ran cold, but it was there that she used Speak with Animals and Beast Sense to get help from some bat friends she made. They told her of the strange acting goblin that frequented the area and led her to an illegal poker game he usually hung out at. Once there, it was time for a stake out. When the goblin arrived to play poker, H Walker cast Hunter's Mark on him. Goblin lost his game to a Tabaxi woman, whom he then followed and used magic to trap inside a card. He then teleported away. Thankfully, my H Walker still had him marked, so she was able to track him down to an evil underground church, where the rest of the party was fighting a group of elementals. H Walker wrecked the goblin in combat (which dissipated the elementals and rescued her allies and the Tabaxi.) Then, she tied him up and dangled him off the top of the church building. Terrified for his life, the goblin then revealed the location of the BBEG (who is an elf). Using Favored Enemy, the H Walker was then able to track the BBEG to the top of a mountain. It was a *really* good session for her.
Now, your turn. What are some fun stories you have playing your Rangers?
I am going to tell an adventures league tale. It gets a lot of shade (from me included) but parts are done well. Its not my best ranger but I want to share a good al experience instead of a bad one.
I was playing an air Air Genasi beastmaster ranger. I had a horse, I had a silver raven statue(it turned into a pet), I had a flying snake. my dm called me a Pokémon master and I kind of hated it because it took away from the feel. I was basically building a swarmkeeper feel before they existed. As a genie beast boss I followed the party into a cave where we were attacked by hundreds of shrunken enemies.(Knolls or goblins i think). arrows flying and ridiculous combat ensued. when it was all done a bear called blooddrinker came out but the magic caused the bear to shrink. the bear was going to die so we needed to think fast and make some good skill rolls. myself and a barbarian with animal skills began to try tactics to save it. archana, animal handling, medicine. finally we saved blood drinker the bear but he was stuck the size of a cat. In AL he was not allowed to participate in combat but I acquired another pet.
I had another human beast master with a flying snake. I was playing with a real mix of skill levels. an optimizer and new players. the new players didn't quite understand 5e healing and thought every point of damage was a risk. so we were all beat up at the end of the day and I had 15 HP left. I asked my dm if i could attempt poison harvesting. he allowed but reminded me of the fail by more than 5 and I would take damage from my pet. As a flying snake he could to at max 14. so I knew I was safe (it cant crit because not an attack.) I rolled and failed I got poisoned. the new players were freaking out. I just blew it off and went to sleep. in the morning I started the next day by asking the dm if I could harvest poison. he said yes I atempted and failed again. started off the day hurt but didn't have a single encounter for the whole day. reset HP. we kept going on like this all the new players were scared every time I harvested. they thought My PC had a death wish when in reality I just did the math and knew it wouldn't be a problem. I harvested several extra doses of poison. I saved the poison on special weapons that could be pulled out when I thought it would work on the enemies. we were 50/50 undead. Finally some of the new damage dealers got upset because my beastmaster was out damaging them. so my snake died (due to a cheesy auto kill ice breath)and I ended up having to get a new pet on a random roll. I got a fire Beatle (one of the most useless pets in the game) But it does have blind sight so I switched to blind sight build. Being human it was nice to not need light all the time. I had a lot of fun with that too. the Beatle did get a couple of "how do you want to do this?" moments.
We had a gloomstalker ranger who used rope trick to avoid a TPK.
Recently that same gloomstalker ranger who used the climbing/swimming speed from Deft Explorer to swim/climb a cliff (sneaking all the way both with expertise thanks to deft explorer) with the thief rogue to assassinate a bandit leader who had his hut overlooking a waterfall on a cliff.
They got the drop on him and managed to do enough damage in the first round to finish him off quietly.
Was pretty cool even if I sat that one out as the warlock.
My first D&D character was a ranger. I remember we were fighting ogres or some other large creature, and I cast Spike Growth which dealt a ton of damage as they moved through the area. In retrospect, I am not sure how impactful it actually was, but at the time it felt huge to me and locked Spike Growth in as one of my favorite spells.
