For clarification, I wanted to check on the rules for using Hunter's Mark with Beast Master Ranger character. Hunter's Mark requires a bonus action, but is a concentration spell (like many complain about). Using an animal companion to attack also requires bonus action. If previously cast, could a character cast HM on turn one, use animal attack on turn two and still claim hunter's mark damage...or is it only one per turn's bonus action?
Yes, Hunter's Mark damage applies for every hit you do, does not matter when you do it during its duration.
Additionally, at 11th beastmaster ranger level, your beast companion also deals extra Hunter's Mark damage for the first attack that hits on the target.
So you could do this: Round 1: Bonus Action: HM, Action: your choice - Beast Companion: Dodge*, Move Round 2: Bonus Action: Beast Companion Action, Action your choice - Beast Companion: Move, Attack or other Action. Round N: (HM Target killed): Bonus Action: Move HM, Action: your choice - Beast Companion Move, Dodge.*
* If you sacrifice one of your attacks during your action, your Beast Companion would Attack instead of Dodge.
Hunters mark takes a bonus action to cast or change target but not for damage so yes you can use the bonus action to command your beast on all the other rounds HM is up and your not retargeting it.
