I have character that is a Deep Gnome Rogue with Svirfneblin Magic.
So, while in the Underdark or venturing above from dusk till dawn, my character is almost the perfect stealth agent simply because of the Svirfneblin Magic feats and abilities. Now, a subclass such as the Arcane Trickster seems to me like that would be a huge and possibly unfair advantage in addition to the already innate abilities of the Deep Gnomes. But I'm not totally against it...

I’ve played a gnome character before; but this seems like a really great fit for a rogue character.
Gnomes are tricky, too…so Arcane Trickster is even better.
Drow Swashbuckler. Replace Drow weapon proficiencies with scimitar, double-bladed scimitar, and longbow.
Starting stats, 8/17/13/10/10/16.
At level 4 take the Revenant Blade feat. Bump dexterity to 18. Find 100 gold, and a good blacksmith, to make a double-bladed scimitar which is now a finesse weapon for you.
My favorite archatype is Thief because it's always fun to steal stuff from people. Even though it's bit weak in comparison to the others but i don't mind it. I did manage to play one for several sessions in curse of strahd but got disintegrated by strahd so.. didn't get to do much.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"

Yeah. Most definitely. You get Gnome Cunning of course. Superior Darkvision. Stone Camouflage. And make sure you check out The Svirfneblin Magic feat... extreme stealth abilities (Nondetection at will, you can blind others, you can shapeshift, you can obscure your presence, and you can cause others deafness). No need for a multi-class really but it certainly doesn't hurt.
A Deep Gnome Rogue can cause a significant amount of concern.
V. Human and took the Healer feat at level 1 for the best non-magical healing build in the game. Since you can use the kit as a BA I would do some good healing while still being able to get a shot in here and there.
I started out as a mastermind. Which probably would have been fun in a more political intrigue centered campaign, but as it was didn't end up feeling great. DM let me swap to arcane trickster which I enjoyed a lot more. Though it still had its issues. I feel like for example the slow growth of spell levels is limiting enough and that only giving you a couple of spells to pick from non illusion/enchantment was a bit overly punishing. Mage hand legeredmain was fantastic.
She used that mage hand a LOT. Be it for picking locks or poking potentially dangerous objects from a safe distance. The one time she didn't and just picked a locked door up close, hundreds of tiny spiders rushed out of the room crawling over her and she freaked out lol.
She'd use disguise self a good bit outside of combat when off on her own doing stuff. Invisibility was nice to have too. Booming blade if she was in melee, but she often favored range. Shadow blade was often used too in dark places for easy advantage.
I think I'd enjoy soul knife if I got a chance to play it, but so far I haven't played another rogue character. Scout also seems like fun, but again haven't actually played it yet.

“Mage Hand Legerdemain” is the real star of that subclass.
Nothing like stealthily placing an “Alchemist’s Fire” flask on an unsuspecting enemy with Mage Hand and casually shooting it with a crossbow.
As a Deep Gnome Rogue there's nothing better than hitting someone with the infamous "Hide...Sneak Attack... and immediately Hide again".
That's why being part of a venturing group where other players have strengths in various areas different from mine is so great. I don't have to be everything. Let the Barbarian fight. Let the Wizard do mystical stuff. Let me do what I do best
As a backup I'm currently building a Half-Elf Arcane Trickster. Basically the idea is he's essentially Tomb Raider. He has a large focus on skills, especially Wisdom and Intelligence based ones.
A replacement character is a high elf swashbuckler with booming blade cantrip. Attack with sneak attack and booming blade then immediately retreat. If the BB does not hit he still has an offhand attack with sneak and then retreat. The nice thing about this build is that it does not need any auxiliary feats like magic initiate to work to its full potential. War caster looks good but it can not be used to its full potential here.
Dhampir swashbuckler with 3 levels in battlemaster for Brace, Riposte and Precision strikes as well as action surge. He has the duel wielder feat and TWF with 2 rapiers. Dhampir gives you spider climb and a movement speed of 35ft as well as vampiric bite which is great for giving yourself +, to hit on your next attack.
I wouldn't call it my favorite rogue, I don't think I have one, but I just started playing a Sea Elf Scout Rogue and it's been a ton of fun. He's a pirate and mercenary Leviathan hunter that snipes with Elven Accuracy + Steady Aim and a Heavy Crossbow. Skirmisher is great support for the restrictions imposed by steady aim spam. I'm enjoying the pile of expertise as a way to inform his RP as a discerning hunter who has learned his trade after leaving his arctic tribe to sail the seas for well over a century (He's somewhere around 300 years old), and there is something I really enjoy about having a character that has absolutely no magic that can hack it in the wild world of DnD.

I'm sorry but your idea does not work. By attacking with a "offhand" weapon I am assuming you are talking about Two Weapon Fighting. In order to trigger the Bonus Action attack for Two Weapon Fighting you must take the Attack Action. Booming Blade requires the Cast a Spell Action so will not trigger Two Weapon Fighting.
Unless of course you take 6 levels of Bladesinger Wizard and get their unique Extra Attack ability.

Do you mean, that the rogue can not use any BA while using BB on an enemy? Which seems odd to me. Or does retreating using his BA seems still possible?

It’s been ages since I played a rogue.
And the thought occurs to me: I haven’t really explored some of the neat subclasses that have been released for this class.
So let’s do as the title suggests, shall we?
What is your favorite rogue subclass?
What has been your favorite rogue character with that subclass? Who were they, and what were they famous for?
I have character that is a Deep Gnome Rogue with Svirfneblin Magic.

My fave is the Swashbuckler
Drow Swashbuckler. Replace Drow weapon proficiencies with scimitar, double-bladed scimitar, and longbow.
Starting stats, 8/17/13/10/10/16.

Profit.

I did create this character on a whim.
At level 2 of what will be a Phantom. I don't know if its my favorite, but its going to be a lot of fun.
I chose it over others, because its quite flavorful. Gave them the Healer feat.

Thief Rogue who was a medic/scout in the army.

That is one of the best builds a Thief can have!

Essio Henzahalea, aka Captain Henzo
