Okay, I believe that every party needs either a rogue or a bard, and that the rogue is better. Hear me out.
First of all, those guys are skill monkeys. They get 4 expertise, and 4 rogue skills too. Adding background skills, you get an incredible skill monkey.
Second of all, they can stealth. This is a pretty big deal, because stealth.
Third, they have incredible combat potential. They could potentially set up sneak attacks every round with expertise in stealth. That's a lot of damage.
Fourth, they're great faces. Not only will they probably have proficiency in charisma skills, they might even have expertise.
Fifth, they have great roleplay potential. They're rogues, thieves, criminals.
Sixth, rogues have thieves' tools. Between picking locks and disarming traps, these things are super helpful.
"You better hope your Bag of Holding is well stocked with Potions of Healing." - The Cleric (the most important member of a party).
uh
Rogue Statements:
"You better hope you roll better on that stealth check, cleric." - The Rogue (and also the monk)
"You better hope you can do actual damage, cleric." - The Rogue (and also the sorcerer)
"You better hope that you don't mess up the negotiations, cleric." - The Rogue (and also the bard)
Cleric Statements:
"You better hope your bag is full of healing pots." - The Cleric (and also... the paladin, bard, druid, alchemist, and divine soul)
"I don't take hits anyways." - The Rogue (and ranger, shouting from 150 feet away, warlock, shouting from 120 feet away, and rogue, who won't actually say it because he's hidden under the enemy's nose)
