Hey guys I’m completely new to dnd I have listened and watched some games so I have a basic understanding but have not stumbled upon anyone leveling a rogue. My question is when you level your rogue the hit dice category says 1d8 or 5, +constitution modifier. My question is does this mean you roll 1d8 and then if it is lower than 5 you use 5 + con modifier or do you just have to decide which you want to do before rolling the 1d8? I appreciate any input as I am about to play my first game and would like to have a better understanding of the rules as far as progression goes!
It depends or your DM. Unless you are talking about adventure league they have rules spelled out in the leveling section, i hope i've never done it.
You always add your Constitution modifier, so 1d8 + con or 5 + con. for reference 4.5 is the average roll of an 8 sided die they are simply rounding up.
Some DMs like to see the roll, others say take the average, some make you choose but once a choice is made you stick with your roll or average. Talk to your DM.
I personally think the average is the best method as it gives us poor rollers a better HP.

Thank you very much for the response, I had a feeling it was ultimately the dm that would decide so that all the pcs are using the same method.
