Hello! New to 5th Edition and still getting my bearings. I was working on an idea for a rogue who uses magic for utility. Subtle Spell Knock to release bindings, Minor Image to throw sound and misdirect pursuers, and Charm Person to make them more amenable to persuasion. I was think Sorceror because they would share a Charisma stat, but I’m having trouble getting the ratio right. Narrative wise I think start rogue for first level and then branch out but what would be the most effective mix of Sorcerer levels for meta magic and spell slots vs Rogue levels for dexterity abilities?
Is there any particular reason you're not just working the Arcane Trickster? While you can't subtle spell knock while in bindings as an Arcane Trickster (though you probably can use Mage Hand), you can use bluff, stealth, or slight of hand skills to hide your spell casting.
What exactly is your goal here, beyond mixing the two classes? How do you imagine the rogue part of your character working? What's the playstyle? Can you describe this character in more depth? Multi-classing, if done poorly, can end up as a horrible mess that is grossly underpowered compared to a regular class, and can make it hard to enjoy the game. Both sorcerer and rogue have lots of abilities that make them very class-level dependent. Three levels of sorcerer, the absolute minimum for metamagic), will put your sneak attack pretty far behind, as well as keep your Expertise low and access to abilities like Evasion pretty late game. Meanwhile, the rogue levels can also keep the sorcerer from ever reaching any higher level spells, limiting their utility.
Ah, I see the error I made... I didn’t realize the other options weren’t part of the basic creator. Now that I’m looking at it online I see that indeed that would be the better option. Initially I was thinking of a Rogue who supplemented his physical abilities with magical ones such as casting charm person on someone I am about to try to persuade or deceive. But now I’m looking at the mage hand boosts and I think that removes my idea about the subtle knock. Thank you for the direction!
