I've been playing for a little over a year as a cleric and my group is starting a side campaign, so I wanted to try out an arcane trickster rogue. I just got to lvl 2 and I can already tell switching between bow and melee weapons in combat is a pain. I was planning on taking a feat at lvl 4 anyway and here are the options I'm thinking of:
A. Take the War Caster feat so I can keep dagger/short sword both hands while casting Ray of Frost when I need ranged combat.
B. Take a different feat (probably Mobile) and use a rapier in one hand and leave the other hand empty for spells.
C. Different feat (not Mobile) and focus on a bow for combat.
I've heard many rogues do something like C, but I hope I can avoid that. If I wanted a bow class, I would have rolled a Ranger. Hiding and taking one shot with a bow per turn doesn't sound fun. I'm leaning toward option A because two melee weapons gives me more chances to trigger sneak attack. It's risky, but we also have a Barbarian and Fighter to help on the front line. It also fits my backstory because he is very cocky and it would make sense that he's aggressive once fights start. Magic is fairly rare in this world, and rogues who use magic are even more rare. He firmly believes he has the potential to be one of the greatest rogues who ever lived, so he wouldn't want to stay hidden for most of a fight.
What type of build have you guys done with AT rogues?
