I would like to ask a question about a debate we had at our RPG table. I want to play Hex, but we come across a discussion about witchcraft magic. The spell lasts for one hour, and can last for 8 or up to 24 hours, depending on the spell space used. However, our GM and some players argued that the spell ends if there is no target to curse.
My concern is that the Warlock already has little magic available. Imagine entering a dungeon and, right after the first fight, the magic ends because there are no more enemies to curse. So when a new fight comes up next, I'll be out of magic, which is a huge loss. In my view, the magic should last as long as the wizard maintains concentration, or until it is interrupted for some specific reason.
The spell's text does not mention that the spell must end if there is no target for the curse, and the section on concentration does not require maintaining a constant target for the spell to continue. Therefore, I believe that if the spell really ended without a target, its duration should be measured by combat, and not by hours.
What would be the correct interpretation of this situation?
The spell does not end if there is no target to curse. You need a target to initially cast it. Once a target dies you can transfer it at any time after that up to the duration. The spell does not have extra limitations built it that you have to swap it immediately or if there are no targets available it ends. Therefore it does not have those limitations. It is still pretty bad since you can only move it when a target dies which really handicaps it when you want to use it for something other than combat.
edit to add just checked the language, Its language is on a later a turn, 100 turns later is still a later turn. Which actually is another limit, we had always ran it is immediately after the target drops to 0 if you have a bonus action you can transfer it, not a later turn, makes it even weaker.
Witchcraft magic? 1 hour, 8 hours and 24 hours? That sounds like the Hex Spell.
Hex remains active as long as you concentrate on it, you can reapply Hex on "a subsequent tum", not "THE subsequent turn". Which means it can be any subsequent turn, it does not need to be the next turn. If if were the intent that the spell would end without a target, the spell would stipulate that the spell would end as such, it does not stipulate that.
