I'm trying to create my first character and I've decided upon a Dragonborn Warlock. I'm struggling a lot with setting everything up, so if someone could help me that would be amazing!
Tiamat, she is a demon who has a somewhat decent following and allows you to play a Fiend Warlock which is pretty nice. I suggest choosing a chromat Dragonborn in that case and working with your DM about story.
I'm currently playing in a Horde of the Dragon Queen, as a black dragonborn warlock Hexblade. I took the background "X-Cultist spy" whatever it's called. Basically we were spying on the cult, the cult found out and killed the people important to me. I turned to a Pact for vengeance. I took 1st lvl in Shadow Sorcerer and the rest in Hexblade, since they fit well together it all feeds into part of the same powerset.
As Uspurer and FullMetal suggest, you will need to pick a Patron and a Pact. I like the Great Old One (Asgorth) suggestion. The Great Old One is a very popular Warlock Patron because of its overall weirdness and lovecraftian feel.
As for your Pact:
If want to be a melee specialist, take Pact of the Blade (and consider the Hexblade Patron)
If you want to be a pure caster, take Pact of the Tome.
If you want a *****in' imp, sprite or pseudodragon familiar, take Pact of the Chain.
So I'm not really sure how the Patron thing works. Like i was thinking demonic parentage for the source of magic, but is that not a thing? Also like besides the story and character I have no clue how to set up the sheet.
My rule of thumb: Don't make it too complex. One of the things is you'll have 4-6 other people all looking to trade spotlight in the game so you don't want to be too Edgelord. Also it's going to depend on your GM how much they want to make it a focus. I often recommend using downtime activities to further your Role Playing goals for a character as there is limited time in a game to do it.
Also part of keeping it simple. I often like to leave a lot of it undecided until later. Play 3-5 sessions as your character before you full decide who your character is. Write up a little background but keep most of it as blank space to be filled in.
As for filling in the sheet... a lot of that will come to you as you play. There are only a few questions. What is your race? Dragonborn (1 question down!) What is your sub-race? What is your class? Warlock (2 down!) What are your class skills? What is your subclass? What is your background? What are your backgound skills? What is your Pact Type? What is your Personality? What are your Ideals? what are your Bonds? What are your Flaws?
Honestly you don't need to know the answer to all of these questions, just a few. Others can be filled out later and others can be refined. Other things like your Pact you won't need to decide until level 3... so you have 2 levels to decide who are you.

Being a warlock is all about getting magic from your Patron directly in exchange for something else. You make a deal with a devil for power in exchange for your soul. You kill a hag's enemies in exchange for a bit of her enchantments. The elder evils imprint their mad knowledge in your mind from contact, both enlightening you and driving you mad. If you want to talk magical bloodlines or some other form of innate magical talent, then sorcerer is the more likely class for that. Indeed, the dragonsoul sorcerer is pretty much made for draconic parentage granting magic. With a warlock, we tend to talk more along the lines of "Patron gives (or teaches) you X in exchange for Y." There's definitely a whole faustian bargain feeling here, and the patron implies a close connection and interaction with an NPC.
Of course, all games are different, and stories are pretty flexible on this account. So, ask your DM if they'd be down with parantage. And its not like you couldn't have a parent teaching you how to unlock your magic as your Patron.
Also asking how would this look on paper and i doing this right?
Copper(acid dex save) dragonborn takes warlock patrons fiend using pact of of the blade.
And so my idea is i can use pact of the blade to deal with most encounter with my dragonborns strength and going invisible to find opening. And unloading my spells and contrails on bigger problems? Like would it work out like that?
The back story would go along the lines of i was in a clan that were slaves to dragons and we were ripped from your demension and now seeing the world with out being surpressed we realize how powerful dragonborn can be and seek power to travel demwnsion to demension spreading the information so the proud dragonborn can see we have veen duped into slavery.
Also when i rolled for stats I got in order. 16. 19.16.19.11.16 originally thought
My advice is to ask the DM for help because you might accidentally make the character in a way the DM doesn't allow. trust me I learned this the hard way.
Hey champ, i just made a pretty ****in nifty DB wock. took hexblade and pack of the blade, letting me make a great sword my spell focus and beat stick. since wocks tend to be more morally grey and the face of a conversation i made my DB a copper boi, lets him breath acid and copper personalities are more trickster like. for evocations i took the slow and pull when i hit with a blast, lets me stay in the back while picking out weak targets and controlling a fight in a way that supports killing with the sword which is part of the whole pact.
all in all you can do alot with dragonbois in the warlock class but personally the type of pact and patron you serve is entirely dependent on your sub race unless you take the hexblade or archfey as your patron, with the former being a very interesting angel for a silver (for good alignment) or green (evil) DB. just remember your hit die is only a D8, dont get yourself killed thinking you have a tougher hide than you actually have.

When you say setting everything up, I'm not sure what you mean.
for Warlock pretty much anything is possible. If you want go *hard* into being a Dragonborn.
What do you want from your character?
Celestial Pact: Bahamut
Fiend Pact: Tiamat
Great Old One: Asgorath
Undying: Null

The only part that confused me is the bonuses you get from race and class that’s it.
