i just got my pact of the tome GOO Kenku warlock to 5th level and I’m having a hell of a time picking spells.
Coming in to my 5th level, I currently have Charm Person, Hex, Suggestion, Darkness and Invisibility.
Choosing from those juicy 3rd level spells is tough. I definitely want to pick up thunder step as an escape tool, but I really like the idea of grabbing Counterspell since the only other spellcaster in the party is a cleric, and possibly hypnotic pattern. I was also looking at Hunger of Hadar for some fun situations. The problem is what do I replace and what do I keep. I was planning on having Mask of Many faces for the subterfuge aspect, so I feel having a charm spell might still be useful. Our whole party was given basically Devils sight early on from some shady dealings with some imps (don’t ask), so darkness has been a real help too. I’m very torn. Any suggestions?
You could probably grab hunger of Hadar. Mechanically the same as darkness but hunger of hadar deals damage. Use repelling blast to keep enemies within the spell area.
Consider focusing on control spells. Hold person would be useful.
Counter spell has it's uses to be sure but with Warlocks I like to take spells that can be upcast or can be used over a period of time.
The challenge with Warlocks is they only have 2 spell slots per short rest until they're pretty high level so the spells that you pick don't matter as much as it seems on the surface since the best that you can do is cast 2 spells per encounter and you can only do that if you get a short rest between encounters. Compare that to a full caster who has 9 spell slots per long rest. Don't worry too much about picking the perfect spells because Warlocks are more defined by cantrips and Eldritch Invocations than they are by their leveled spells.
I'm playing my second Warlock right now and I'm splitting my spells, including cantrips, 50/50 so that about half of them are useful in combat and about half of them are useful out of combat.

Summon please demons is a fun spell.
Hunger of Hadar creates a black void. Devil's Sight cannot see into Hunger of Hadar. It is very mechanically different than Darkness.

Currently level 11 in my Archfey Eladrin Warlock. They are super fun. You may consider giving up Invisibility if your whole party is using Darkness effectively since you would already be getting advantage/giving disadvantage during combat. Unlimited Disguise Self from your mask of many faces and your high charisma score should mean you can effectively bluff your way into anywhere your not supposed to be. so alot of your utility of invisibility, you could get elsewhere if you are looking for spells to play around with.
As for what to take, I find Hunger of Hadar to be overrated in function specifically because it negates Devil's Sight. Counterspell is great but mechanically expensive due to the warlock spell slot limitations. Hypnotic Pattern is one of the single best battlefield control spells in the game. Drop it on a group of enemies and you have 10 rounds where you can 1 vs Party the bad guys with no extra saves by them. It's stellar.
