So I’m a level 6 Hexblade in an AL Ascent into Avernus Campaign. I keep trying to contact my patron but get no answer. My Dm told me there must be a mechanic in the class to communicate with my patron. I needed advice if there is such a thing?
Additional, does my patron have to be a cursed weapon like the Blackrazor or can it be the raven queen?
What would a hexblade patron want in return?
I am really trying to lean into the role playing aspect of my character. Especially with me being chaotic good and the plane of Avernus slowly corrupting the party toward evil.

Your patron is communicating with you, not the other way around. It could be enticed to communicate when you need it, but there are no set mechanics as far as I know. My Hexblade Tomelock conducts an eldritch ritual during Long Rests: she summons a raven made of wisps of smoke, whispers to it for some time, then the raven flies off and disappears mid-air.
Additional, does my patron have to be a cursed weapon like the Blackrazor or can it be the raven queen?
Nope. The magic weapon is the link or the tool used to make Warlocks, but your patron is actually the maker / owner of said weapon.
You have made your pact with a mysterious entity from the Shadowfell – a force that manifests in sentient magic weapons carved from the stuff of shadow. The mighty sword Blackrazor is the most notable of these weapons, which have been spread across the multiverse over the ages. The shadowy force behind these weapons can offer power to warlocks who form pacts with it.
Your patron is a mysterious entity from the Shadowfell; said entity creates sentient magic weapons, and uses them to manifest itself and/or its will. My Warlock's patron is either the Raven Queen herself or the Iron Maiden, consort of the Iron Duke Dispater (and she's a Dispater Tiefling). It's still uncertain.
The Raven Queen, for example, collects memories and strong emotions, especially those coming from loss and tragedy, via her Shadar-kai and her ravens. My Warlock, in fact, recounts her daily experiences and emotions to the smokey raven, and via the raven to her patron itself (Raven Queen or Iron Maiden).
My Hexblade Ashkara'a met her patron (or, perhaps it was the Raven Queen's emissary...) but anyway, after she got a calming chill when she was trying to kill someone, it was a human shaped shadow who pulled her into the Shadowfell. He told her about the Raven Queen, and that she had her eye on my PC. The Raven Queen thought that Ash was interesting, and wanted to help her in exchange for recounting her thoughts, dreams, and experiences.
Ash woke up, found a sword next to her, and started to use that. She called it ShadowReaver, and she whispered to it at night, and occasionally, it would grow cold in her hand, and she knew that she was supposed to kill something nearby. After a while, it grew more powerful, and eventually, it was able to speak to her.
So, the Raven Queen is her patron, and ShadowReaver is her pact weapon. It's not her actual patron, but maybe more like a two-way connection to the Raven Queen...
Help me here. I guess this would be a mechanic question. Does the player choose the weapon and its powers when becoming 3rd level, is this something worked out with the DM or is there a list/table to get/create them from? I also get the general sense that these weapons get more powerful with the rise in power of the Warlock, is that correct?
You get to pick the weapon. At first level, you can take an existing (non magical I think) weapon and make it your Pact Weapon so you can use your Charisma on hit and damage rolls. At 3rd level you can either create one out of nothing, or take one you happen to have handy (can be magical) and turn it into your Pact Weapon. There are Invocations that you can take once you have the Pact Weapon boon.
Improved Pact Weapon (no level requirement, but you have to have a Pact Weapon, so no sooner than 3rd)

It depends on the Patron itself.

I think that's pretty much it.

Another fun thing is that a Pact Weapon summoned out of thin air doesn't need to be used by you. It disappears after one minute.
Nothing like summoning a halberd to give to the party's fighter when the situation changes!
