Hey everyone, for a friendly one shot in an underwater domain i wanted to make a build inspired by lovecraft that honors his spooky fish men, the deep ones
Essentialy i want the warlock to mutate to a spooky fish monster man thing and would like to hear your suggestions... and dont worry it doesnt need to be strong just on theme.
So i thought, pact of the tome human, that has devil's site, improved eldritch blast and blessing of the deep
And ill take some cantrips from the druid's spell list, something there HAS to grant a beast like attack right?
When someone says fish monster I tend to think of a Deep Scion (pg135 of Volos Guide to Monsters) so assuming going for lvl20 Warlock for 8 Invocations total, I'd likely go for (in no particular order):
PHB invocations:
1) Agonising Blast: Eldritch blasts emit an strange gargling scream as they fly to their targets. (a DM may allow a not so cosmetic effect and allow eldritch blast to deal psychic damage instead of force to reflect Deep Scion psychic scream attack)
2) Armour of Shadows: When activated the Warlocks sprouts 4 tentacles similar to those of a displacer beast, these sprout form the back of the Warlocks head. The Warlocks form appears to shift slightly, not enough to actually cause a Blur effect but enough to grant the bonus AC.
3) Book of Ancient Secrets: The Warlocks Book of Shadows alwasy appears slightly damp and made of rubbery squid or octopus skin pages bound in shark skin. If taking a Thon Whip as a bonus cantrip for Pact of Tome it manifests as a tentacle from a jelly fish, squid or octopus instead of a thorny vine. If taking Poison Spray as a cantrip (either form normal warlock spell or via pact of tome) it manifests as a strange inky cloud instead of a gaseous spray.
4) Devil Sight: The Warlocks eyes appear larger, darker (almost pitch black) and rounder than normal. Should the Warlock cast a spell that creates any form of darkness effect, the darkness swirls into exsistence in a manner akin ot a Squid squirting a cloud of ink.
Invocations form Xanathars:
5) Aspect of the Moon: the Warlocks face twists and transforms, to resemble that of a Deep Scion.
6) Gift of the Depths: the Warlock gains gills behind each ear.
7) Grasp of Hadar: the Warlocks Eldritch Blast manifests as a tentacle that whips out to grab the target and pull it closer. (This would be in addition ot the aforementioned gargling scream if you combined it with agonising blast).
8) Maddening Hex: the Warlock emits a scream that only the hexed target can hear (again mirroring the Deep Scion's Psychic Scream attack).
Bonus Cantips for Pact of Tome:
Primal Savagery (because it either makes your hand grow claws or your mouth grow fangs, so you could go for a leech/lamprey fang filled maw and bite people in melee)
Shape Water (just for flavour and occasional pranks)
Thorn Whip (for the tentacle whip effect mentioned above)
Go for a multiclass Barbarian - Path of the Beast (you'll want at least level three, but no more than 6) / Warlock - of your choice. It's SO on theme, and I've been having tons of fun with my Lizardfolk PotB Barb/Undead 'Lock - Pact of the Blade. He's pretty melee focused, but for a Lovecraftian themed game, I'd go Tome.
