So I´m currently playing a Great old one warlock. Unlike many GOO patrons my patron is very engaged and is actively communicating with me.
I started the campaign not really knowing what my patron was or what his goals were. Now 8 months later I have gotten to know my patron and he is definitely evil, which my character is not. During the campaign the party has befriended and helped a good demigod.
Now what I´m thinking is that my warlock somehow will break his pact with the GOO and instead make a pact with this demigod. This could possibly result in me changing subclass but I mostly want to do it for the RP. I have talked to my DM and he said that i patron change is possible.
Do you guys have any good ideas how you would roleplay a patron change like this?
Warlock pacts are somewhat dark by design. A "warlock" is a character driven by the passionate pursuit of knowledge, and is frequently compelled to make a deal with the first patron that can offer them what they want because such an opportunity may never come again. (A 1st level character doesn't have a lot options for petitioning planar beings.)
The conflict between their patron's demands and their personal values is rich with opportunities for drama and story development. It is a dark gift.
That said, since you've already gotten DM approval, I agree with sfPanzer that such a transition ought to be serious an ordeal. So you kind of have two major options:
(1) The Long Way
Negotiate with your patron for freedom in exchange for completing a nearly impossible task.
Find some way to break your contract, such as with a Wish spell, or petitioning a more powerful being/deity.
(2) The Short Way
Find a way to cut yourself off from your original patron. Perhaps through an amulet of protection. This would essentially give you two patrons, but your GOO patron would probably be pissed and send other servants after you to figure out what happened. You would be under the constant threat of retribution, and if you ever lost the amulet, your soul would probably be harvested immediately.
The "easy" route could be for the Patrons to negotiate on your behalf. If your new patron agrees to owe the old patron a favor, then you could be traded like a commodity without any in-game commitment.
